Travel Fees For Photographer

OG Dianna, on February 4, 2016 at 10:41 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

For those who booked OOT photographers, how many miles did/would they have to travel for your wedding and what was the travel fee associated with it?

$300 of travel expenses for roughly 200 miles (3 hours one-way)... Is that normal? Just wondering, thanks!

Considering they'll probably need lodging it's reasonable

Hmmm, good question. My photographer lives 3.5 hours away. But, she's also a family member (but a professional , as in it's the job she does to support herself). I am paying for her hotel room for two nights (b/c I want her here for the rehearsal) in addition to her quoted price.

The most I was charged was 60 and it was a hour away so with hotel and travel time it's about right. You may want to look into a more close photographer

That's actually cheap, assuming you meant its 200 miles each way, that 400 miles and 6 hours of travel.

$1-$1.50 per mile is typical. Hotel fees if required.

My photographer is 3 hours away. No charge for travel, but I'm putting him up for two nights so he's there the night before.

Beatrice, did you totally miss the part where the family member is a professional and Kimi is paying her?

"have to work"...they're being paid to work...it's one thing to shove a camera in Aunt Janet's hands and say "Here, Aunt Janet, this is your job now", it's quite another to hire Aunt Janet the professional photographer to do her job for a day and pay her to do that job.

We're paying $100 for them to travel from Tampa to Gainesville. Our videographer is coming from Jacksonville and isn't charging any travel fees.

@frugal_gator Mine is coming from Tampa too! Jacksonville to Gainesville is not a bad drive, I'll be making a trip there this weekend. Smiley smile

I think mine is charging me $150 and it's about 1.5 hours each way for him. I'm ok with this

Seems reasonable. Ours are 1 hour away and I believe that was the max before a travel fee.

That seems cheap. Many photographers we spoke with said that if they have to travel more than 50 miles they require a hotel room.

And Beatrice, notice you're the only one reacting like that? Hop off your high horse and find another thread to focus on the one thing that could possibly be nit picked if you didn't read the whole comment. Shit starters are unnecessary.

I think $300 for 3 hours each way is really reasonable.

No, I am not "making" my family work on my wedding day. She is a distant cousin who I have seen one time in ten years. She would not be on the immediate family/close friends guest list. But I do love her vision and work. When I asked if she was available, she said she would love to do it. If I were "making" family work, the FFIL (also a professional) would be our photographer. He's actually pretty ticked about it. But he was told he is a guest, not a vendor.

Hi Dianna. If I'm reading your OP correctly your photographer is charging you $300 for a total of 6 hours drive time and mileage. If so $300 is very reasonable. Smiley smile

My photographer lives in Fort Hill, SC and we live in central Pennsylvania--this is also where we're having our wedding. She is charging us $500 for travel. Although her husband works with her as the second photographer for weddings, so that fee might cover his travel too.

Her parents live in our hometown, so she will probably stay with them while she's here.

My florist charged a $200 delivery and setup fee for a 20 min drive and 2 hour set up.I know its a different vendor but that sounds good to me for a 3 hour drive one way.

Thanks for the information! The photographer has been great and easy to work with so far. He forgot to bring up the travel fee during our conversations and I just got word of it last night. Also, my fault for not asking... It completely slipped my mind. Thanks for the input, guys! Smiley smile
