Transportation for guests??

Lauren, on January 19, 2017 at 11:35 AM Posted in Planning 0 21

I just started getting quotes from limo companies and it is so much more expensive than I thought! We do not know exactly how many guests will have have staying in our hotel block but we are thinking between 20-30 based on talking with some family members already. The hotel is 5.5 miles from the venue where the ceremony and reception are. (all at 1 place)

Is transportation to and from the hotel for overnight guests expected? It is not a far drive but I also want everyone safe. This planning process can be very stressful!

No, I have a hotel block reserved as well. Its less than a mile from our venue. We will not be providing transportation. Transportation can be provided as a courtesy but is not expected from the wedding guests. Some hotels offer shuttles for a small fee.

You could look into doing an Uber Event.. or even just suggesting that your guests take a cab or uber to your venue.

Oh I did not even think to check with the hotel! I will definitely do that, thanks!

We blocked rooms at a nearby hotel and we are paying $400 for a shuttle service so no one has to drink and drive!

Our hotel block is only a couple miles away as well, but we are having a shuttle so no one has to worry about a DD for the 10 minute drive to the hotel.

Rather than limo companies that specialize in weddings, try limo companies that specialize in airport runs. They tend to use more utilitarian vehicles, but often the cost is significantly less.

That being said, unless your ceremony or reception site are somehow inaccessible from normal forms of transportation (for example, up a mountain with a road, but no parking at the top) a shuttle, while nice, is not necessary.

I just went through this. We have 40 rooms blocked and our hotel doesn't have a shuttle. Our venue and hotel are only 3.8 miles apart. We are going with a school bus. They are so much cheaper and who really cares? I just want my guests to enjoy open bar and not have to drive, no matter how close it is. Even the school bus is $700 because you have to pay for the whole time, not just when they're actively driving. It was definitely a shock for me too! But IMO, a shuttle is a must for guests staying in a hotel.

Our hotel has a complimentary shuttle, but we also hired a school bus for $250 for the entire night.

Im not sure where you are located at but here in ABQ NM the cheaspest limo rental is $550 not including tax or tip for one limo for 3 hours. I would suggest that if you are trying to keep costs down have your guest take Uber Black.

It's expected where I live, so I'll be providing a shuttle. Look into Uber as well, maybe people on here have posted good things about setting up an event with them at a discount. Also the hotel may have shuttle vans you can rent for a small fee.

We have a hotel block with about 35 rooms booked. My mom is very pro transportation being provided. So, we found a shuttle service and it's $650 for service from 4:15-11:30. The venue is less than a mile away, but it is in a very "city" location, right downtown, and my country mother can't imagine walking.

She also recently decided she couldn't handle people having to park in the garage, and if they had to pay she wanted to make sure we paid - so she booked valet parking. Seriously, she's going overboard. But she since she's paying, she's saying.

Transportation is not required, but it's a wonderful thing to offer your guests (I'm so glad my husband and I paid for a shuttle service so we wouldn't worry about guests driving after drinking or having to limit themselves just to be sure). Like others have said... Check with the hotel to see if they offer any shuttle service you could pay for. Also check other companies besides limo companies... Old school buses, larger 12-passenger vans... Any transportation is better than nothing, it doesn't have to be fancy Smiley smile

As far as I'm concerned, this answer depends on the time of the wedding and if the overnight guests have flown in or not. Luckily my reception will end btwn 3pm &4pm with only 2 out of town guests who are driving here, so i'm not providing shuttle service. However, if my wedding were later and I had more out of town guests, I would probably try to have some of my family be designated drivers.

In all seriousness, i'm not paying to transport people if their sole reason they can't drive is because they want to get wasted. No way!

Krystal - People don't have to get "wasted" to want to ensure they are safe by not driving after a drink or two. One or two (or even three) drinks does not mean a person is trying to get wasted. It's a safety precaution. Better to be safe and have transportation available than ASSUME people want to get "wasted" and that's the only reason you need it and then not have it.

Some hotels provide courtesy shuttle services so check with them and see. Our wedding is from 5-1am and the hotel is providing shuttle services to n from the ceremony. They even offered to pick up guest from the airport. The ceremony space is about 3 miles

I checked with the hotel and the do have a shuttle - 12 people max so I would need 2 trips there for sure maybe more and back and it is $150 round trip so it could add up quickly...maybe they can work with us on the pricing a bit depending on how many trips we have to make

I really don't think you need to be responsible for the guests' transportation to the hotel. It's a nice gesture, but unnecessary. Look into Uber events as someone said above, you can pay for a portion of the Uber rides and you have control over the accepted pickup/dropoff locations.

$150 for 12 people is quite expensive. I think the uber will be a better alternative
