Train length alteration question

Elena, on January 28, 2020 at 12:51 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 3
I really want a dress with a monarch length train for my cathedral wedding. However it is very rare to find a dress with a monarch train. Everyone (aka bridal consultants) all keep telling me that the cathedral veil will give me that long train I want but I still want my monarch length train! My question for you guys ( and I realize it’s vague since I haven’t posted a pic of the dress) .... do you think an alterations person could make me a detachable monarch length train for my dress if the dress itself can’t be lengthened by the designer?

It’s definitely going to depend on the dress. Something to consider is the sheer weight of the train, depending on the material. If it’s something like satin, it’s going to be HEAVY and you’d have to take a lot of extra measures to ensure nothing breaks from the weight. I’d also imagine with the amount of fabric required and possible decorative elements needed to help it blend in with the dress, it’ll probably not be a cheap alteration either. Since I don’t know what your dress looks like, I’d recommend checking out Mary’s Bridal since they do design bridal dresses with cathedral and royal trains, and see how the dresses with the detachable trains look with and without the train to give you ideas of what could work for your dress. https://www.marysbridal.com/

I had wanted a super duper long train as well, but ended up settling with a dress that I loved and a cathedral veil after not having much luck finding dresses to try on with a long train that were in my price point. My train was longer than a chapel train, but not long enough to be considered a cathedral, but it was still pretty heavy when both bustled and laid out.

I don't know much about alterations but just wanted to jump in to say you can get veils even longer than a cathedral length. I believe there's a longer length called "royal". So, if all else fails that would be an option. Blancaveils would do it for you.

Welcome to the WeddingWire community, Elena Smiley smile

From my understanding, it would totally depend on the dress itself, the material, etc. I’m sorry I can’t provide any specifics, however, I would advise speaking with a seamstress before deciding on a final dress to see if he/she thinks it is possible.

Both PPs shared a fantastic idea. If the alteration is not possible, you could always get a super long cathedral to achieve that look you want!

Has any dress caught your eye so far?
