Too much skin!

Dusty, on April 6, 2012 at 6:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

My SIL asked me to be a bridesmaid in her vow renewal- that's great, I'm super excited and honored!

The only problem is the dresses she picked (before she asked anyone to be in her bridal party). They're cute, but I'm just not comfortable showing that much skin. I'm 29 and a mom of four, I'm no model, but not overweight- I just don't feel it's appropriate for me to be wearing something like this. Smiley sad

Is there an okay way to bring it up, or do I need to just step down? (I really don't want to, but I will if it's rude to ask her to reconsider the dresses).

I'm afraid I'll look like I'm backpeddling if I say something now... She posted a pic of the dress on FB and I said it was cute- but I thought it was the dress she was wearing (she's a few years younger than me), and I had no idea she was going to ask me to be a BM.

Please help!!!

It worked for me(the link). I would just explain the way you did here. That you thought she meant it was for her when she posted it, and while you thnk she could pull it off due to her being younger, you don't think it would work for you and are not comfortable with that much exposure.

I think you should go to Davids Bridal and try it on to see how you feel in it before saying something.

I would just tell her how u feel. I wouldn't be comfortable wearing that and I wouldn't make my bridesmaids wear something they weren't comfortable in. Maybe you could add a wrap? Straps?

The dress itself is very sophisticated, and I don't blame her for liking it. It's the amount of skin that it shows that I'm not okay with. Strapless and short is too much for me Smiley sad I tried on one very very similiar when I went to get fitted for my sister's wedding (I'm in her party too) and it was not cool! Thankfully she went with a longer style.

Tell her you like her choice you just don't feel comfortable showing that much skin and you wonder if you can help her find something similar that shows a little less leg?

I agree that dress runs short. One of my BMs tried that on at DB. Granted she's 5'9" and leggy but OMG it was not church appropriate on her.

I believe Alfred Angelo makes something similar at a similar price point that goes to the knee but I could be wrong. Strapless solid colored knee length dresses can't be THAT hard to find can they?

I agree with Pan S. just explain it the same way. It's a very bodycon dress so I can see why some might not feel comfortable wearing it.

Talk to her let her know you're not comfortable wearing something that short and strapless while you think it's cute it makes you uncomfortable and see if maybe you guys cand finds a compromise something similar but that you's be more comfortable in. I know if any of my girls were not comfortable in my wedding I'd feel horrid.

I couldn't pull that much off. I however am not thin. If I were... I'd rock it.

I say try it on, if you are uncomfortable ask if you can wear the same dress in a full length skirt?

The dress is nice. Not church appropriate (if the renewal is in a church) I would speak with her and see if it would be okay to get the girls together and have everyone try the dress on. While there, you can see if they have a similar style that has more length.

Does David Bridal's offer a "tall size" in dresses?

While I agree the dress is short, I'm not sure there's a way around that. (Follow everyone's advice above.)

DB's will add straps to dress AND they usually have matching shawls and/or jackets to help with that issue. If she allows you to switch dress, but still wants to stick with strapless, see if she'll let you wear a shawl or jacket with it.

Wanted to add - the reviews for that dress are pretty good. You might want to go try it on. And some of those reviews have pictures -- dress is right above the knee on most.

I would definitely express a little concern in how much skin it reveals and maybe there can be a compromise. Maybe you can do a cute bolero or a pashmina to go over your shoulders. Just let her know and hopefully she'll understand. I'm sure she can meet you in the middle!

One of my BM's picked this dress out & it's actually longer than it looks. Try it on & if you don't like it then let her know you want something different.
