Too many desserts?

Catti Labelle, on April 13, 2017 at 1:05 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

Our caterer doesn't do desserts so FH and I are trying to figure out what we really want to do after dinner and have started to check out some ideas. We know we want cake for everyone. We are also dead set on getting an ice cream sundae bar since it's a July (2018) wedding. The thing is, we originally toyed with the idea of a dessert table and it's still in my head.

Would it be overkill to have a dessert table (cookies, brownies, fruit tartlets) in addition to cake and ice cream? I want it all but I'm afraid that we'll have a lot of desserts left over.

It might be a lot, but I'm not sure. It depends on how much food you're having for cocktail hour and dinner, and how long the reception lasts. If it's a 2-4 hour reception, that might be a little too much food in a short amount of time. If it's going to be over 4 hours, and the dessert table will still be open throughout the reception, you might be okay.

I am always a fan of dessert, and would go for other desserts over the wedding cake!

If you're concerned, you could turn the dessert bar into a favor station, and people could take it with them at the end (OOT guests may enjoy that).

ETA: went to a wedding with ice cream last September, and I saw more people with ice cream than wedding cake.

I don't think its over kill. My venue offers a dessert table, there will also be cake and more. IMO you can never go wrong with sweets.

I think you'll have lots of leftovers, but then again, I'd rather have real food than sweets. Not a fan.

I love dessert. If I was at your wedding I would be excited to have all of those options

I don't think it's possible to have too much dessert, lol....

BUT I'd do the cake, the ice cream and instead of doing a table, I'd do a platter of mini desserts on each table. I think people will eat more of them if they are right there, and you don't need as much to make it look pretty. I'd say 1.25 pcs per person, and when they are gone, they're gone.

Brownies were always the biggest hit (we used to make a layered brownie with mint or orange cream frosting and ganache on top...yummmmmm...) followed by lemon bars and then little chocolate chip cookies. I always used to throw in a few chocolate covered strawberries because they look so pretty.

Our venue offers a huge dessert table. So we are boxing slices our wedding cake so people can take it home. I love Celia's suggestion of having desserts right on the table.

Never for me. If I saw a dessert table on top of cake and ice cream, I'd be allllllll over it!

You could also have the dessert bar cut into the smaller pieces so they could have the option of combining the ice cream with the other desserts. It sounds amazing to use the cookies or brownies as toppings on the ice cream.

I don't think it's too much, I think variety is good so there's something for everyone! At my wedding I am having wedding cake, cheese cake, carrot cake, creme brûlée and chocolate lava cake ...FH and I enjoy giving our guest a big array of options but that's just us. At the end of the day if you really want to do the dessert table, cake and ice cream then do it! I'm sure your guests will love you for it!

I see dessert bars at every wedding and to me it's not over kill. I love the options. You may have leftovers after but your venue should be able to pack them up so you can take them home. Love the ice cream bar idea!

I like a dessert bar, do a small cake for your cutting ceremony and let people help themselves to the sweets. I am thinking either a pie/tart bar or a cake ball bar myself. Not too sure yet.

I agree that some it depends on how much you have of everything. if you are doing the ice cream bar and some sort of dessert table, I would do a smaller cake. with all the options, not everyone is going to eat cake. We are doing a small cake to cut, cupcakes for more options and a cookie table

I don't think so. A wedding I attended had all of those options and more for desserts and it was amazing. It also allows people more of a variety.

Thanks everyone! I like having options and really appreciate your thoughts on this. I like the idea of the assorted mini desserts and take home boxes as favors! We have lots of time to revise and edit if need be.

I can NEVER have too many desserts, lol. If you want it, do it!! Maybe smaller amounts of each, or platters on the table like Celia said. I may steal that idea!!

When I saw you title "too many desserts" I thought to myself "How can this be?"

There can never be too many desserts, in my opinion!
