Too expensive!

heathlynnt, on August 23, 2018 at 8:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 21
SO and I have always worked hard to be financially sound. We own a business and we're raising 2 kids and a dog. We own a home. We've also been together 12 years, engaged for 6 years. We finally agreed now was a good time to get married. Feels like the right next step for us and it'll be great to celebrate with our kids.

I had booked a venue and then started realizing the preferred caterers were way out of my price range. We're trying to cap this at 15k with 66 guests. Is it even doable? I feel like we looked everywhere and either our wedding is too small or our budget is not big enough. We can afford to spend more but we're very frugal and paying for this all on our own.

Should we be upping our budget? I know it's a wedding but it's one day and I can barely wrap my head around 15k, nevermind more.

Should we change venues? Wedding isn't until 8/2/19.

I personally think you need to change your venue. It sounds to me your venue is way to expensive for 66 guest you should be way under 15K. I am having a total of 150 guest and our Venue was inclusive with catering and came to about 12K. So look at other venues before making the final decision you should be able to get something you really like and more within your budget.

Maybe it's because we're in Connecticut? The venue itself was only $2000. The least expensive caterer comes in at $9000, which includes everything except chair rentals. But we'd still have to find a rehearsal dinner spot and pay for that, plus clothing, hair and makeup. And invitations, decorations. It is adding up quick and making us anxious. I didn't know if we were just overthinking it.

We are using a combined venue and caterer. The catering standard package is $150 per person, but we are having a lunch reception so we cut out everything except for hors douerves and the entrees. So it's now $70 per person. For 125 people, our food budget is still below 10k! We have a 15k budget too but literally double as many people as you are having. $9000 sound like an absurd amount for 66 people!

*We're in New Jersey too so similar region

We are having a 100 guest wedding and the venue and food for guest will cost 2,500 total. Its doable. You just have to look around and find the cheapest

Thank you! We've been continuing to look but it's not easy. Like I said, if the venue is reasonable, they always have like a minimum 100 guests. So aggravating.

Plus like I said it's all inclusive. Even open bar. That's why I didn't know if I was just being cheap.

I agree with the response above. Maybe look for another venue as it does seem like they are charging you too much. Also, I know I the price sometimes does depend on the day of the week/ season you want to book and the time of day. If you really love the venue you have booked maybe inquire about price differentials for a weekday as opposed to a weekend and time of day. For me and my FH we booked a venue in NYC at 65 guest for $8,000 on a Thursday evening which is really good seeing as how everything in NY is expensive and our overall budget is $11,000. The price was double that for a Friday & Saturday. Never up your budget; once you agree on a set amount stay with it. Congratulations and good luck to you and your FH!

My husband to be and I are getting married on a budget of about $7,000 with 250 - 300 guests. There are ways to cut the costs and still have an elegant wedding. If your looking for ideas I'd be happy to help!

We do have a Friday planned but Saturday and Sunday are not much cheaper. It's really the caterer. And I have only 4 choices. And they're all more expensive than that.

Well now that you said that I really see what you are saying...your not over thinking it the clothing the makeup everything does add up quickly...Maybe if you can find away to cut cost of not going over that 15K if maybe you have a family member or friend that can do your makeup or hair then you are saving some kind of way. It's your day and it should be special which can be costly. My advice may not be helpful but I hope everything works out for you and Congratulations!

Are you ladies doing anything for bridesmaids? Paying for dresses, hair or makeup? Curious what's normal etiquette.

Some venues use preferred caterers that are extremely expensive. You might want to find one that will allow you to use who ever you want. I personally think 15k for 66 guests is expensive but I guess it could also depend on your area and the cost of living. I’m getting married in PA and for my max guest list of 120 we were budgeting 4-5k.

Also look into to see if you can provide your own Alcohol because that would also come out cheap for you..We are having open bar but we are providing the Alcohol ourselves which made our price come down by 3000 dollars...So just keep that in mine maybe you can provide your own Alcohol it would be much cheaper.

Our venue is about $85/pp for catering including open bar. There is a minimum which has the service fees, etc. $8500 for a Friday wedding. Our venue does their own catering and bar which made it very straight forward

It's doable. FH and I are paying 10k for about 100 people.

You might consider having a restaurant reception. They typically do not have a minimum. (If your guest list is too small to sell out the whole restaurant, they will often have a private room that can accommodate you.) They typically don't charge you for the venue, if you are purchasing the food and drink. And of course they include things like chairs in the price.

Typically, the cost of your reception rental, food, and alcohol is about half your total budget. The rest is dress, hair, make-up, photography, DJ, etc. So if your budget is $15,000, you're looking for a restaurant that can provide food and drink for 66 people (including tax and tip) for about $7,500. Even in Connecticut, that should be doable with a moderately priced restaurant.

What kind of venue are you considering? What kind of menu? Maybe it would be helpful to know your vision.
