To sleeve? Or not to sleeve?

Rosie, on June 1, 2021 at 7:21 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 29

So I had my first fitting today! And I’m a bit torn.

I originally wanted a dress with sleeves, but I couldn’t get one! So, I bought extra fabric with the intention of potentially adding them, although I was ok if it couldn’t be done – I’d prefer no sleeves to ones that looked like they didn’t belong, or that looked like they were an afterthought, if I’m making sense.

My seamstress whipped up a sleeve to give me an idea today, and here it is. I do love it. It’s what I originally wanted, but I’m worried it looks like it doesn’t belong. I’m also nervous because most people seem to think sleeves make you look old. What do you think?

I would prefer the sleeve BUT that’s because I want to hide my arms so it would be my goal. The sleeves for me would be a “not ideal but meets my goals” LOL
Your arms are great! And the dress looks gorgeous without the sleeves. Truly.

I think the sleeve looks great and more importantly it’s what you want.

Aww, thanks. I do love the look of sleeves - I don’t think I’d feel anxious without them, but I am worried about being cold on the day..

it’s in the NSW highlands so not cold by US standards but it can get very chilly if you’re not in direct sun or once the sun goes down

my dad looked it up and last year on that day it was an average of about 15°C/57°, going down to 11°c/51° at night. Normally when I’m up there at that time I’d be wearing a long sleeve top and a sweater plus a coat and possibly a scarf.

Thanks. I do love them. I’m just not sure if they look like an after thought, but I guess If you hadn’t seen them without you probably wouldn’t know, and she put that sleeve together in 5 minutes, so the real one would look way better

I love the sleeves. I think it's a very sophisticated, classic look.

Oh sure, clearly the sleeves will be more "finished" - but in the picture you can tell that they will look great and WILL NOT look like an afterthought. And the temp you may be looking at? Go for the sleeves - you know you want them Smiley smile

The sleeves look fine. I think she did a quick job just so that you could get a visual of the sleeve. But, when it’s complete, I’m sure it will look cohesive.

Not to sleeve. I'm sure he wants to see every but of you so he can remember it the rest of his life. Unless you're riding off on a Harley

I feel like the sleeve makes you look matronly. Also it seems to cut off at a weird point (a couple inches above your wrist makes it just look too short). I think the no sleeves look is much more elegant and sophisticated.

    Definitely team no sleeve!

Why not consider adding a lace topper or bolero/jacket of some kind? It would give you the look of sleeves, but be removable to adjust for different looks/temperatures.

    Team No Sleeves.

The sleeves are just too much in this fabric in my opinion. Too heavy and too shiny. Reminds me of a high school choir dress.

I think if you want the look of sleeves, you should consider a bolero made from a thinner fabric such as lace or tulle.

You look stunning with and without the sleeves. What if she made them detachable so that you could wear them for the ceremony and take them off for the reception?

Haha, I do! I think I just need a little push and a bit of reassurance they don't look ridiculous.

She totally did. She literally fiddled with some fabric for 5 minutes and was like tadaaa a sleeve. I was shocked! So I know it would look better when it was done. It's very hard to visualize, which makes it feel like such a gamble. I already know what it looks like without sleeves - do I want to take a leap and hope it will look good with them, is the thing!

Fair! I wouldn't have bought it if I wasn't prepared to deal with no sleeve. Thanks for weighing in Smiley smile

Just wanted to add that I think a 3/4 sleeve with a slight flare at the end would look really nice. The dress with sleeves makes you look like a princess from a period piece!
