To Pasta Bar or not to Pasta Bar

HappilyEverAfter329, on October 13, 2016 at 11:50 AM Posted in Planning 0 17

Hey everyone!

So my fiance and I decided that we do not want a traditional plated wedding dinner. We decided that we want our dinner to express us and we want to make sure everyone enjoys the selection as much as we know we do. I come from a large Italian family who eat a lot of pasta and my fiance enjoys Italian food as much as I do so we decided why not have a pasta bar! We were thinking baked ziti and a few different types of pasta alongside meatballs, chicken parmesan, eggplant parmesan (I'm a vegetarian) and lots of salad and bread. Our wedding is not going to be huge, maybe 70-75 people at most. My question is does this sound feasible? Do you think this is going to end up costing a lot more money than a sit down plated dinner?

Thanks everyone!!

I've heard buffets are sometimes more than a plated dinner.

Hey there! We are doing a pasta bar! I am from a big Italian family so pasta is our thing! We hired a chef who is a well known chef in the area, and he also goes to our church. So we are having two pastas, a red meat sauce, a white sauce and a vegetarian choice! Along with pasta, we have salad and bread. We have old jars that we are going to be Parmesan cheese in on the tables.

Ours is $14 a head. But this chef also goes to our church and is donating the money to our church! We are really excited!

Honestly, how will 75 people get in line to eat at a pasta bar? Would you have several stations? Will the venue provide more food if you run out or people go for seconds? Logistically, you might have issues but the menu sounds delicious and it is making me hungry!

We're doing a pasta bar too and it is looking like it's going to be less than half the price of most other caterers in our area. We also love Italian food. We're getting appetizers from the same place too, probably caprese skewers and meatball kebabs, etc. We're also doing one gluten free option since we have a couple family members that are gluten free.

    I think it's a great idea!

@junebug Have you ever been to a wedding with a buffet instead of a plated dinner? It will work the same. Traditionally tables are released one at a time to go to the buffet, which keeps foot traffic down. It's ESPECIALLY feasible at such a small wedding.

We are having a pasta bar. In my catering experience if a buffet cost more or it depends on if you do self serve or if you have catering staff dish up the food.

    Pasta bars are great!

I would lay things out in stations. Pastas at one station, parm dishes at another, salad and bread at another. That way multiple groups can get served at once.

See if it is something you could add to cocktail hour instead of the main meal. Our venue charged $6 more pp to add to a sit down dinner. The portions are smaller, but can be customized. For example, we can have a penne and a tortellini with a few different sauces

As a guest I would love a pasta bar, especially since it sounds like you'll have plenty of options for people to choose from!

That sounds like a great idea! I wish we would have done that instead, but I love our caterer. The food is going to be amazing! :-)
