To kilt or not to kilt that is the question

Tbear, on September 12, 2018 at 1:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23

My fiance and I have been tossing around the idea of wool tartan kilts, dress shoes, kilt socks and flashes, dress shirts and vests as outfits for the wedding.

I even found a company who has even offered to weave our own tartan.

Is this too crazy outlandish?

I am just not sure if the outfits go with the barn wedding style

I've always loved the kilt wedding look!

And I think that that could totally go with the barn idea

Tbear, this is amazing. I love this idea, not outlandish at all. If you wanna do it, you have my full support. I think kilts and tartan would perfectly fit with a barn wedding style. And a fall wedding? Think of how cozy you could be!!

What's inspired this idea between you and your fiance?

Is he Scottish or of Scottish descent? If so and the kilts are in the budgets of the groomsmen (or better yet, your budget) then go for it. He should use his clan's tartan or a culturally neutral one, the same goes for the groomsmen.

If he isn't then skip it.

The inspiration? We both love kilts. He owns three, I own four of em (mostly more informal cargo style kilts). We both already own higher end wool kilts but I really like the idea of getting our own tartan. The kilt maker who offered to make them for us has been so sweet to us and our local gay community even though his company is half a world away in South Africa. (Back in 2013, he actually donated 2 wool kits to two local community leaders who had done some amazing fundraising for local non profits). We had already talked to a local tailor about getting custom vests made, so it would be easy to have them match the kilts if we get them made earlier

The idea of another kilt means that we would be able to wear our gear more than just on our wedding day. I really enjoy the idea that we would be reminded of our wedding every time that we wore them again. (And honestly, who doesn't enjoy a man in a gorgeous kilt?)

I'm Irish and he's got some Scottish in him. We don't have any groomsman, only our Maids of (dis)Honor aptly named as they are the two best friends who have gotten us into tons of trouble in our youths... (fun trouble but trouble nonetheless). So it would just be the two of us in kilts

    Thanks everyone for the support

P.s. If kilts, then I forsee us purchasing new fun Fleuvog shoes

It sounds like kilts are something special for you. A good friend of mine had a RenFaire themed wedding which was definitely outlandish but it fit them soooooo well (and I got to wear a gorgeous dress as a bridesmaid). At the end of the day the wedding is about you and your fiance, everything you do, including how you dress, should speak to you! I say go for it! (and post pics when you have the outfit Smiley heart )

I live in Scotland with my Scottish partner and he always says “if someone wants wear a kilt, wear a kilt!” He and his groomsmen will all be wearing them for our wedding, including Scottish, English and American guys. The only thing I would be weary of is the cost. If you are making a kilt, especially with custom tartan, prices run very steep for the entire outfit. When buying they are seen as an investment because they get worn to every wedding etc. but if you think you’ll get the use out of it go for it. I really love the idea of creating your own tartan, I know a couple designed their own and it allows really personal touches, which is very romantic.

I am Scottish, living in Canada -- any time someone wears a kilt i am SO proud and think it looks amazing! No one says you have to wear a suit. Kilts are formal wear and look absolutely fantastic. Go for it! Whatever you feel best in, it's your big day.

Then full speed ahead with the kilts!! It sounds like they have so much incredible history and meaning to you, and you're right, it would be a reminder of your wedding day even when you just see them in your closet (or wherever you keep your collection.) It sounds perfect to me! Smiley smile

Once you get this figured out, please come back and show us!!! I wanna see what the kilt maker comes up with as your tartan!! Smiley smile

Ohhhhh! I think that would be STUNNING!!!
And if they can weave a Special pattern for
    your new family! Omg! Awesome!
It's Your wedding- do what makes YOU Two happy! As long as it isn't going to hurt anyone or seriously offend someone- I say "Go for it!"
But then I do the MD Renaissance Festival. And my FH just bought a kilt to wear on days it's too hot for our courtiers outfits.
The vest and dress shirt idea ads the formal elegance to it too.

    Good news!
The other groom is into it!
    Better news!
We won’t have to have our own tartan weaved (which will save money). The kilt company that I am looking to use (www.cargokilts.co.za/) has a tartan that is pretty much on point for matching all of the fall leaf colors that we are using! This will be my 5th kilt from this company, so the owner is over the moon that he gets to be a part of our special day. (Ironically, he teased me about 2 years ago that he wanted to make our wedding kilts back when the word wedding was yet to be a part of my vocabulary lol) The Buchannan Hunting tartan is obviously meant to match our color scheme as neither of us are of that clan. (My apologies to any offended Scots)

Now, I’ve gotta pick up a Prince Charles jacket and vest, formal sporran and other kilt accessories. Well, I cannot complain about the overall price of the outfit compared to what most of you beautiful brides shell $$$ out for your dresses!

I love it! My cousin's husband wore a Kilt for their wedding. But he is also from Scotland and she moved there with him after their wedding! I have some pictures to show you!

Their groomsmen also wore kilts! It was amazing and I loved it!

Sorry this isn't the greatest picture. But here is just him!To kilt or not to kilt that is the question 4

Then the both of them after the ceremony. To kilt or not to kilt that is the question 5

After reading this, I think kilts sound like a GREAT idea! It sounds like they are special to the both of you! *edited as I read your last response* I love the print you guys are going with to match the fall leaves. Gorgeous.

Also, a BAM is "back and married" post... it has photos from your wedding day and all the do's/don'ts that you encountered in planning Smiley smile
