To Bustle or Not to Bustle, That is the Question

Krystal, on December 22, 2016 at 6:50 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27

I absolutely love my dress, but I'm not sure if I should bustle it or just have the seamstress add a wrist loop and call it a day. What do you guys think?

Bustle it for sure. I'd hate to have my dress attached to my wrist! It would get in the way when dancing and hugging my friends and family.

Bustle all the way! It will keep your hands free and run less of a risk of say, your dress landing in your dinner while you eat.

Beautiful! I agree that you should bustle. What are your reservations about bustling?

@Runawaybride honestly, the expense! I live in NYC and they're asking for $500 to hem and bustle the dress. It feels a little ridiculous to pay so much in alterations for a dress that was $750. I might just have to suck it up though.

You guys are right, I really don't want to have to carry my dress all night.

Team wrist loop! I had a 4 point bustle and it took 20 mins to get it up. On my wedding day we had 0 time to stop. I ended up carrying my dress . With a wrist loop you can choose when you want the train up or down . Definitely wish I would have gone that route. Here's my train

@Kentucky OMG that train is gorgeous! Wrist loops amp up the romance of dresses like yours! So pretty!!! I'm thinking I'll do the loop anyway, but work harder to find a more affordable seamstress so I can do the bustle too.

The "wrist loops" are actually not intended to be used that way, though some brides do have them added for that purpose. They're supposed to be looped over the hanger so that the train doesn't pull the dress and stretch it while it is being stored.

That said, a train gets very heavy and can be very unwieldy, and a bustle gets it completely out do the way. They also generally don't take too long to do the day of, so there's no real reason beyond just not wanting to take the time to do it that you wouldn't be able to on the day of.

Thanks Krystal. I thought we'd have no trouble finding time for the bustle. I was so wrong. We wanted sunset pics so before the reception wasn't an option. I was so obsessed with the train I wanted my dress down for every pic. Total waste of money but it stores pretty haha the day goes by so fast, enjoy every minute!

I think a wrist loop would be super annoying.

Its hard to tell from the picture, does your dress have buttons down the back? Mine did and it made the bustle super simple and so quick. My photog who didn't go to any of my fittings was able to do it and un-do it no problem. They added a small loop in between some buttons and added a specific clear button between the dress buttons to put the bustle on. My bustle only fell out one time and that was after I had been sitting for dinner.

I feel like a wrist loop would really get on my nerves while dancing. But it may not bother you.

I found a picture of a dress that looks almost identical to mine with a bustle and it has me seriously considering one now. Most bustles I've seen, I haven't liked but the bustled in the picture I found is barely noticeable. I don't want to have to carry the end of my dress around for the duration of my reception. For pictures it's fine but the second I enter the reception, I'm not going to want to be bothered with it. I'd say at least consider the bustle or check other prices.

Love your dress! I tried that one on at BHLDN and loved how curve - hugging it was! So, a couple things...

Wrist loops are not terribly common in most of America, so I doubt you'll find much support on here. They're very common in the UK and some other European countries but I think they *can* read dated to Americans.

Secone, *if* a loop comes built-in to the train already, that is not an actual wrist loop, it is a hanger hook for the train as MNA said. If you go for a wrist loop, have your seamstress add a proper one in.

Third, having tried on that dress, I don't think a wrist loop would suit it. Although I thought it was very light and comfortable, the silhouette was very fitted and the fabric was almost like a crocheted-lace...I think between the fitted shape and fabric potentially stretching awkwardly, you'd have a weird silhouette going on if you had it up on your wrist. You want to look elegant, not like you're stretching your dress.

I think a simple British or French bustle would work fine. My gut is saying English right now. You will look beautiful either way!

I am having the same issue but I think I am going with a wrist loop. If your dress is as light as mine it shouldn't be too heavy. I'm not doing it for money reasons I just think with a light dress like that it looks nicer. Whatever you choose that dress is amazing

Bustle for sure. Those wrist loops look lovely but you wouldn't believe how holding your hand up can ache.

I am bustling my dress. It seems like an easier solution to have everything neatly and safely tucked up so I don't have to worry about it the whole night.

That dress is gorgeous! I would bustle.. Just so your don't have to worry about it the entire reception. If money is an issue... The bridal shop i got my dress told me it will be $25 for the first bustle, $7 for every bustle after that. It shouldn't be too expensive to bustle your dress.
