To bugspray or not to bugspray?

Erica and Brian, on April 24, 2015 at 2:18 PM Posted in Planning 0 41

Our ceremony is outdoors in the middle of the afternoon by a pond. I'm putting together a comfort basket...tissues, fans, bugspray? I'm not sure how much of a problem bugs will or will not be in the Hudson Valley in late June. I've looked at natural sprays and lotions but I'm thinking they will be greasy or smell "natural".

Is it just good to have the option? Ceremony will only be 15 minutes then we move to a covered deck with fans for cocktail hour and indoors with A/C for reception. I just can't decide. Thoughts and suggestions great appreciated!

Ours is outdoors as well. We'll be providing our guests with OFF Deepwoods wipes. We just went to an outdoor wedding and I got attacked by Chiggers. I thought they were mosquitoes Smiley sad Ever since then, we're dead set in providing everyone with OFF bug wipes.

My aunts and grandmother live in the hudson valley, i dont remember it being terrible in june. more like august...

what if you can figure out a way to stick some of those Off clip on things in the aisles/chairs?

But it would probably be cheaper to just add the bugspray.

@AlexisM082 , Do the OFF Deepwoods wipes work well?

We are having an outdoor ceremony and will be having a basket filled with bugspray/sunscreen tissues etc for guests to use Smiley smile

@Alexis that's what I'm afraid of! Do the wipes smell good? They probably stain way less than a lotion or spray huh? @Surfergirl I feel like you're right as far as things not being too terrible. Right now it's gnats everywhere and I hate them more than mosquitos! I hadn't thought of the clip-on things. That's definitely worth looking into.

They do! My brothers use them constantly on themselves and their kids in Puerto Rico.

Is your ceremony at a private residence? Mine is outdoors at my parents house. They will be spraying the yard with mosquito repellant treatment and a few other things to control bugs. It works fantastic!

They have wipes that have different scents to them, but they're significantly more expensive. They don't smell bad.... I'd rather smell like OFF than be scratching myself in all of my wedding photos.

Is it a accrual wedding venue? Our venue is an outdoor garden wedding setting venue. We already spray our gardens. If it is an actual venue, perhaps they already spray as well.

So, this is an option, as as someone who has been bitten so much they developed a fever, USE THERMACELL. Thermacell are products that heat a little "cell" pad. It gives off a VERY slight smoke (usuall you have to strain to see it, no one ever knows it's giving off anything) that repells bugs.

I WILL NEVER USE ANYTHING EVER AGAIN.

They make backyard torches, and I guarantee they will keep EVERY bug completely away. You can walk through a mosquito bog with these things on, and not get bit.

It's almost terrifying how well it works.

The wedding I was at where I got eaten alive by Chiggers was actually rated one of the top wedding venues in Arizona.

If you are going to use something that smokes...I would highly recommend talking to your venue ahead of time. Most venue will not allow something to be smoking or on fire with guest present.

If it was set on the ground, some types damage the grass, and if stepped on can cause issues (for the person stepping on it & the venue). I would highly recommend talking to your venue prior to making your decision.

It doesn't "smoke". It emits the tiniest little ittiest bit of something from the cell. You would NEVER notice it. Even when I"m looking hard for it, I can't always see it. It's just how it's dispersed.

They're $35 a piece though.... I don't have it in my budget for how many we'd need. If it covers 15x15 like it says, I'd need 10 Smiley sad There's no way FH will allow that much more in our budget.

It isn't a private residence, it's a riverside B&B. But I'll definitely make sure to ask the coordinator about it. I don't they spray too much because there's also a small farm on the grounds and the pond we're getting married next to is a rescue reserve for swans and ducks that have been displaced.

I'll definitely check out the Thermacell thing! Thanks! ETA: Yeah $35 a piece is sort of not in our budget anywhere. But I'll still check.

Alexis, I know they're expensive, but they really will eliminate every flying bug in the area, at all, ever.

Honestly, just get a handheld one for your sweetheart table.

We own seven, so I promise they work Smiley smile

I would get the wipes. I am allergic to mosquitoes, I don't stop breathing or anything but I usually end up in the ER because the swelling gets so bad. One time I got bit on my ankle and I need crutches for a week to walk. I hate bugs!
