To After Party or Not To After Party...

ALYSSA, on April 25, 2019 at 4:22 PM Posted in Parties and Events 0 10
Let Me Preface- I always imagined my wedding reception spent dancing the night away with my groom, almost like our own private club with close friends and music that keeps you on your feet. Since 90% of our guests are coming from out of state, we tried to make things easy by hosting both our ceremony and reception at the same venue, but they only give us 4 hours in the space.

Our Ceremony begins at 5pm, and we leave at 9:30p. Looking at our timeline- there's only an hour and a half allotted for everyone the dance floor....o.0
Not to mention at 9:30 on a Saturday night I feel like our guess our age would be like "ok, now what?".

Would it be weird to have an unofficial after party at a nightclub after? By unofficial I mean we (future husband and I) are not renting space or providing additional food drinks (our wedding is already open bar), and there's no pressure for guests to attend. Is anyone else doing something like this?

I don't think so! We are having an unofficial bar hangout Friday night (the night before), we mention it on our wedding website & in our welcome bags just saying we will be in the bar from 7-9 hanging out if anyone wants to stop in. I think it would be fun for the bride & groom to say something like "we will head to night clubs X and X after the reception if you want to join!"

I think that’s awesome! We will be doing an after party as well. There are no clubs near us, so we were thinking going to one of the bars close by. Another option would be to see what kind of spaces hotels offer. You could maybe look into renting out one of the party/banquet rooms at the hotel most of your guests will be staying in or just going to the hotel bar. This way they are already headed that direction and can easily stop by.

Our wedding is an afternoon wedding from 11 am - 4 pm, after that I reserved the hotel bar from 4:30 - 8:30 pm. On my website I called it a no-host after party so people will know that drinks/food will not be provided & it’s optional. It’s fairly common in my area.

We did! Our wedding sounds very similar to yours. Most people were staying within walking distance of the venue in a fun downtown area, so we all just headed to a bar after the reception.

That’s not weird at all, we just found a really cool restaurant in town that’s owned by a celebrity that our whole group is excited to try so I made reservations for everyone for before rehearsals, but it was done so everyone knows it’s a pay your way type of deal.

Sounds good to me! I would just make sure you get the word around to everyone; put it on your website, word of mouth, or have the DJ mention it before the last song or something.

There's a hotel across the street with a bar that closes at 2am; our reception is done at 11pm. So if we want to keep it going, we'll go right across the way.

We are not doing this, but we have our venue until midnight so our situation is a little different! I think your idea is fine though! If I were in your shoes I would do the same thing!

I think that's a great idea provided it's not far from one place to another. My cousins did this - we were in NYC and they just gathered everyone interested in an after party at the end of the night and we walked over to the closest bar that could accommodate the group. We had a blast and it was a way to have a more intimate group after a big event.

Ours will end at 10pm. By the time we finish tear down/clean up it'll probably be 11pm. We will go home change and probably go to the casino/club near our house for an after-party with whoever wants to participate! It'll probably mostly be friends.

I threw an impromptu after party for a couple of friends after their grandma kind of kicked everyone out of the reception so they could start cleaning up early. I just got on the microphone and said "after party at my house! BYOB!" and everyone just texted each other my address.
