Tips on dealing with knee pain right before wedding?

Rae, on September 16, 2018 at 11:25 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 17

Ugghhhhhhh five days away and my knee decides to act up Smiley sad

Basically, my kneecap is super swollen and throbbing. It's partially induced because I pushed myself too hard over the past couple of days, I think. I have a lot of issues with this knee because of a car accident injury from a few years ago, and I'm sure the pressure changes with this hurricane aren't helping! My wedding is this Friday and obviously, I need to be able to move around and I want to dance...

Other than on/off icing and Tylenol, elevation, what are some other things that can help?

If you see an orthopedist or physiatrist, they may be able to do a cortisone shot to help with the inflammation and pain.

I really badly messed my knee a few years back. Here and there it will act up sometimes to the point of not being able to stand. I just put on a knee brace for acouple of hours and it just helps to stabilize.

Tylenol is more of a pain reliever than anti-inflammatory, unless you have some medical reason not to take ibuprofen, I would take advil or motrin to help with the swelling. I second trying to get into a doctor tomorrow if you see one for your knee, and getting a cortisone shot. Just make sure to take it easy the rest of the week before the wedding, even if the cortisone makes it feel better.

Arnica. It comes in pills or lotion. It’s a natural pain reliever that works for muscle pain, sprains, bruises, and other injuries. It not only reduced pain but also reduced the swelling. I have lot of problems in various joints and it works sooooooo well. If the pain and swelling is really bad lemongrass essential oil is also amazing. Put one or two drops in the arnica cream and rub it into your knee at least once a day. You’ll be amazed.
Best part is they’re not even expensive and are easy to find a lot GNC or a local health food store

My DH actually injured his knee a month before our wedding and he had the same issue with pain and swelling. What gave him some relief was prescription strength ibuprofen for the pain and swelling, ice/heat with elevation and wearing a brace. After the wedding he got 2 cortisone shots and then a series of 3 other injections (not sure what they were) and those have helped but he still has to wear a brace and he still has pain. In fact, we had to change our honeymoon from a 2 week tour of Europe to relaxing on the beach in Hawaii because he can't walk too long. Good luck!

A lot of good tips today! I've been keeping my leg elevated and iced and it looks much better than this morning. I'll keep everything in mind though, just in case it gets worse.

Take naproxen 2 over the counter tabs twice a day, with food, that is prescription strength. Tylenol wont do much for you.

I have knee problems, too. I broke my knee on ice a few years ago and my "good" knee acts up when I am babying my "bad" knee. I have found if things are acting up from over doing it, I will brace both knees at night and sleep using the old braces I was given during my broken knee recovery. It really, really helps.

I'm a little late to the game here, but I have bad knees due to years of dance when I was younger. I use kinesiology tape for support, stability and swelling. I prefer KT Tape pro as it's waterproof and will last a week. I'm sensitive to adhesives and have no issues with this. You can find videos by KT Tape on how to apply it on YouTube, it's super easy and you can apply it to yourself. I started using it because I take taekwondo now but it even helps with the pain I read having doing stairs.

Take a combination of Tylenol and Ibuprofen, something prescription strength if possible. You need an NSAID to help with the swelling, Tylenol will only help with pain. Otherwise RICE that thing and do your best to let it get better on its own.

I messed up my knee a few weeks before our engagement photos and I had pretty ugly bruising. It was the summer when we did our photos so I was wearing a skirt. I used arnica gel on my knee and my bruising went away visually after a few days. I am still waiting to get my photos back but I don't think that anyone will be able to suspect a thing.

When I was able to get a doctor's appointment, I mentioned the arnica gel to the doctor and he kind of shrugged off the effectiveness of it. I didn't necessarily see the impact on my swelling but I don't think it will hurt to use it.
