Tips for dress shopping alone? Also, Davids Bridal questions.

CoffeeNColor, on September 11, 2016 at 6:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 31

I don't have any family in my state, and my BMs are also all scattered. It looks like I'll have to go dress shopping alone. My mom can't take the time to fly up right now. I absolutely hate shopping on a regular day, so I'm quite nervous about finding a dress without moral support. On top of which, my parents want to be involved in the decision. Does anyone have suggestions?

One thing I heard is to make sure the dress will photograph well. How do I accomplish this?

I also have Qs about Davids Bridal: (1) What have been your experiences? I hear mixed things on WW. (2) When are the best sales? It seems that they're always having some form of sale. (3) With DB, should I not worry about getting the best discount, just make sure I don't pay full price?

ETA: My dress budget is $700, so I'm not sure where else to try besides DB and consignment shops. Boutiques in Seattle can be pricey.

You may not be able to have someone there physically, but you could skype or facetime your mom.

Some salons won't let you take pictures so ask about that! I found it very discouraging because I'm the type of person that needs time to think about a large purchase lol

Hmm I went to DB and I didn't have a good experience and I went on my own. It wasn't busy just me and I think a BM on another dressing room(not my BM) but she had her own stylist. Mine just kept disappearing To the back of the shop for some reason for about 10 mins after each dress so what could've been easily an hour appt turned into nearly 2 hours.

Due to the circumstances of our wedding, I wasn't able to have any family or friends with me when I went dress shopping. I also did not have any time to do any type of fitness plan or lose weight I've been really wanting to lose prior.

But I had a wonderful consultant (although I do not have any specific experiences at David's) who helped make sure I felt beautiful and found the perfect dress. She was more than willing to take photos for me and with me. You can also do some form of video chat, Skype, Facebook messanger, or something of the sort if people want to be involved but can't physically be there.

Best wishes, and I'm sure you will look beautiful!

I would avoid David's Bridal alone. That place is nuts.

I had a very good experience shopping at BHLDN on my own. They work with you one on one, and take plenty of pictures of you in your dress, so you can show friends and family.

I at least can help with your David's questions.

    1. My brides tend to leave good reviews even if they don't find the dress. A lot of it has to do with the location's management team, and if you connect with your stylist. Also avoid weekends. I alone sometimes have 3 brides and a couple bridal parties all at one time. Naturally it makes the experience less enjoyable for everyone involved.

    2. We always have some sort of sale going. And they are extremely similar. We will be starting another big one the month.

    3. I don't feel bridal gowns are the thing to hunt for a discount on. If you get one, great. If not, but it's a gown you love within your budget,

Don't say no just because it's full price. But that's just my opinion.

I went to Davids Bridal for my second dress shopping trip. I wasn't alone, but I do suggest you have the consultant take photos if you are alone. Make an appointment. My first trip was on a Monday and my second was a Friday, both right when they opened. Oddly enough the Friday appointment was better. I wasn't a fan of my consultant at the the first appointment, but the second one was fantastic.

They are always having sales, but I don't know when the best ones are. My dress was being discontinued, so it was a buy it now or don't buy it at all situation. Good luck!

I'd advise you to avoid David's Bridal alone. The confirmation email you get when you book an appointment even tells you the consultants work with two people/groups at once. Feeling like my consultant was ignoring me somehow made me feel more alone than I already did! I left in tears.

I work in a very high volume store. Orlando is the number one store in the state and my store comes in second very close behind Orlando. With that being said, I highly recommend if at all possible to go during the week. Seriously! Yesterday was a zoo. And like a PP mentioned, we have a pretty awesome team but a team can either make a store or break a store also make sure you make an apt.

One thing I disagree with the store I work at (and DB in general) is that they double or triple up stylists, which can take some of the attention and help that you need off of you(especially if you go in on a weekend, which is why I recommend to go during the week)

Eh. I went once. My stylist disappeared quite a bit too and was a bit rude. When I was asked what kind of dress I want, I mentioned something about an ankle length which apparently was stupid because my stylist snorted and said, 'aren't they all ankle length?' Um... No?? She kind of made me feel like an idiot. Especially when she continued to say, "you mean a tea length." She was vary dismissive and uninterested in helping but I had FH there to kind of help cancel her out and keep me from out smart-assing her.

But I've read where a lot of people have had a great experience. I guess every store just has that one person who doesn't do a really great job.

I have had AMAZING experiences at David's Bridal. I have shopped there twice for bridesmaid dresses, twice supporting friends looking for their wedding dresses, and once looking for mine (which I found!). The sales associates there are supportive and engaging, and mine only left my side if she was going to pull a dress or an accessory. I had just come from a salon where I felt INCREDIBLY pressured to pull the trigger on a dress I wasn't 100% sold on. At David's there was never any pressure. I would definitely try to go on a weekday or when they first open on a weekend though.

Oh, also--when I first went to DB to help my friend I thought the quality was going to be a lot cheaper than the salons we had shopped at... but I was impressed!!

I had such a great experience with my consultant on my 1st visit to DB (2nd bridal store I tried), that I specifically requested her for my second appointment to look at more dresses. Even though she was working with another appointment at the same time, during both visits, I didn't feel rushed or neglected. I was able to consult with my mom while the consultant was helping the other bride in the fitting room, and not feel pressured. Subsequent BM appointments for a wedding I'm in next month have been less than stellar. These have been with other consultants; the professionalism was noticebly lacking. I'm in the alteration phase for both weddings and am hoping this experience goes a lot smoother. All appointments, except for 1, have been at 11 on a Saturday morning and not crowded or hectic; things began to pickup around 1. The first alterations appointment, which included 2 dress pickups, was last Sunday at 1:00 and there were no other customers the entire time I was there.

I have had nothing but the best experiences at my local David's bridal. That being said I don't go there on a weekend.

I shopped alone at David's Bridal. Here is my advice:

    1. Avoid weekends and holidays. I went on a Thursday morning at 10 am and it was just me in the store for most of my experience, one other mother/daughter came a bit later. Book an appointment in the morning on a weekday.

    2. Allow your consultant to pull dresses that you don't necessarily like, either. They know what they're doing, and I'd say more than half of all brides end up buying a dress in a style they didn't plan on buying. I'm one of them. I didn't like the one she pulled on the hanger but it was AMAZING on.

    3. Don't fall into the "if you don't get it now, it might not be here again" ploy. Every single bridal place will tell you that. If it's sample or not made anymore, that may be true, but don't even let that pressure you into a dress.

    4. Here's my big one: try to enjoy it and take your time. I had fun, but I also was alone for the same reasons you are and felt a bit more self conscious because of that. I love the dress I bought, but I bought the first time I went shopping. I wish I had spent more time looking at multiple places.

    5. Have your consultant take a front/back picture of the dresses that you are seriously considering. Once you buy a dress, delete the pictures of the ones you didn't buy (because that's how dress regret happens, you can't look at other dresses once you buy!)

    6. Once you find a dress you're serious about, ask to try a crinoline or hoop on underneath it, so you know what it looks like with/without (but buy a hoop instead of a crinoline, because crinolines are HOT!!!)

I had a great experience at DB, and got a great dress on sale.

Be confident in going by yourself. I saw an episode of say yes to the dress that a bride took about five or six people and they ALL hated the only dress she loved. That episode gave me so much anxiety that I went alone. I did have a little anxiety when I finally found the dress because there was no one there to experience it with me but it was nice not hearing a bunch of nit picking

My BMs got their dresses from DB, it was definitely the easiest option in my opinion because everyone was able to go to their local store. Their ages range from 26-14 so I asked them all to look for long, chiffon, and the Marine color and let them choose from the different tops. They had probably 8 different options so everyone was able to find something that suited their body type. This was also the cheapest option I think.

Make sure to try on a lot of dresses. I feel like they rush you sometimes. Be open with the dresses as well. Don't say no until it's on. You'll be surprised how different they look on!

Love all of the feedback about DB. I'm going to check out some dresses a week from today and this is very helpful! Going with my mom and BFF in the evening. Hopefully it won't be too chaotic. I definitely downloaded their app and have a few items saved under Favorites that I hope will direct my consultant.
