Tipping your vendors

Tricia F., on July 28, 2011 at 1:47 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

I need clarification so we don't end up looking like cheapos. So do we tip every vendor??

Here us a list of all of our vendors..

1) Photographer & Videographer is a husband/wife team who owns their own business

2) DJ

3) Photobooth attendant

4) Florist who will also be our day of coordinator

5) Make up artist who works at a salon which is where I had my trial but she will be coming to my hotel to do me and my BM's hair, so she will be getting paid cash

6) Hair Stylist - same as above

So I'd say no then if she is charging you for that extra service. I'm a wedding planner on the side...if I get a tip great, but I never expect one.

Thanks Cydney. Looks like the DJ and photobooth attendant will be the only ones receiving a tip Smiley smile

    1) Photographer & Videographer: No. You do not tip out owners.
    2) DJ - Optional - preferred. Did he do a fantastic job? You be the judge.
    3) Photobooth attendant - Read the small print in the contract to see if 'service charges' apply. If they do - then no.
    4) Florist who will also be our day of coordinator - Depends. Do they own their own business? You may tip out (regular wedding planners you do typically tip) If you do not tip you should send out a small thank you
    5) Make up artist - YES.
    6) Hair Stylist - YES.

See, i'm against the makeup artist and hair stylist tips ... but I'm also going through two different gals who are running their own business and work for themselves...plus my makeup artist is charging me almost $200 ...

Cydney, my MUA is charging $175 for airbrush make up and hair stylist charges $125. I'm also paying for my girls' make up. That's a lot of dough!

Tricia - you might want to do a small tip for makeup artist and hair stylist...but this is completely up to you too. Do you know the girls really well? Did they do a fantastic job. I have a different view point. But I do not agree with paying the wedding planner a tip, and this is coming directly from a wedding planner. Especially if this gal is running her own business via floral.

MUA and Hair Stylists get tipped. They are doing a service. If they do a great job, they deserve a tip.

My friend cut and colors my hair in her home where she runs a part time business. I still tip her every time.

I think you should tip anyone who has made you happy or done anything above and beyond that day. It's not required that you tip everyone, but I don't think it's fair that just because someone owns a business that they don't get tipped. Three of my vendors own their business and I plan to tip them anyway. (Tips are already part of my budget and if someone doesn't live up to expectations, then I just won't hand it over.) Anyway, I believe every single one of them, if they've done what you've asked deserves a tip, even if it's $5. Don't forget extras too - anyone who delivers anything (cake, flowers, etc.) should be given like $5 pp and we plan to tip our bartenders just a little extra even though they're welcome to take tips from our guests. I also don't see an officiant on there - that's also someone you should tip or give a small present to, especially if they're not charging you.

The rule of thumb for make-up & hair styliests is that you should tip as you would for a regular appointment. 15-20%.

@Sarah our ceremony will be performed by a priest in a cathloic church. Really, they get tipped? I thought our church "donation" was enough.

@Cydney no I don't personally know them, my florist used them when she got married a few months ago and I loved their work. So I may give them something extra, still undecided.

I've heard that the BEST way to show your appreciation is to give a GREAT review. And I plan on giving reviews on all of our vendors.

If your getting married at the Catholic Church you don't tip the Priest. A donation is preferred. My church requires 2 alter boys who must be tipped (at least $20) and a wedding planner ($100) two floral arrangements are required and the church gets to keep it after the ceremony. We plan on giving a hefty donation on top of that.

Also - for vendors that did an excellent job a thank you card or small gift wouldn't hurt. (small gift like cookies would be perfect.) Something to show that they were really appreciated.

What would you tip a photobooth attendant for two hrs?
