Tipping Vendors

Maria, on May 10, 2021 at 1:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 10
Hey ya'll!

We only have 24 days until we FINALLY get to have our wedding reception! How much am I supposed to tip my vendors? Florist, 2 photographers, videographer, DJ, MC, and photobooth attendant. I might sound horrible, but I just paid them thousands and can't believe I'm supposed to tip these people! 😖Please let me know what's a fair tip. Thanks everyone!

Oh FH was upset when I told him we have to tip vendors. He understands catering but others (DJ, photographer) he couldn’t believe as we are already paying for full price service. To answer your question though, I have no idea 😂

I've read that a tip between $50-$150 is usually appropriate for each of those! Good reminder to build that into my budget.

You don’t tip for bad/mediocre service. Only those who go above and beyond the call of duty. Catering has a built in gratuity. You wait until after the honeymoon when you have a clear objective view to make assessments of the services provided and then you send tips and write your honest reviews.

Tip what you feel the ones who went above and beyond deserve for their work without going broke. The percentage is 10-20% or $100-200

It did not even occur to me that I would have to tip the vendors! I knew to tip the officiant but that was it. Goodness...

I think so too. I mean yea...they are providing a service but we pay a generous fee for those services. There is just so much to pay!

I literally just had a convo about tipping with my florist. We got off topic talking about haircuts and she mentioned that the person she goes to owns her own business out of her home and isn't cheap, and when she recently went to pay using Square it gave her the option to tip. She asked her hairdresser how much people usually tip and the woman was like "you can tip whatever you want I usually tip 20% when I go out to eat" and my florist found it shocking that someone who charges several hundred dollars for a couple hours of work expected the same tip as a server who makes below minimum wage. My florist flat out told me she calculates a generous living wage and then some into her pricing so no tip was ever expected on top of that.

It does sound like vendors providing a service during your wedding (photographer, musicians, DJ, bartenders, servers) should be tipped, and you tip a MUA/hairstylist too, but you don't need to tip the florist or rental companies that help you set up your wedding but don't provide a service during the event itself. Additionally there does tend to be a distinction between whether or not the person is an owner-operator or employee. In cases where the person working your event is the employee/contracted worker of a larger company, it seems like people say tipping is required, but less so if the person is the owner and no one else is taking a cut of your service fee. I don't make the rules, and I don't agree with them (we should just pay servers a living wage and eliminate "required" tips because they don't mean anything if they are status quo for mediocre service), but we are planning to tip our photographer, DJ, servers, and bartenders but I think that's it.
