Tipping Question for hair & makeup for the day of

irin997, on June 10, 2011 at 11:23 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

So I have a hair and makeup package that cost me $725 for everyone and included my hair trial. They are coming to the hotel to do our hair and makeup. I already gave a $20 tip at my trial and was thinking of giving $120 the day of. Do you think this is good enough?

I think if your spending that much already and you tipped at the trial, there is no need to tip again

I don't think you need to tip, you are paying plenty.

I think that's fine. Did you check your contract to see if tip is built into the cost? Sometimes it is...

Makeup artist or Hair Stylists - You don't have to tip them if they come to you. If you go to the salon, then you should tip them 15%. Why you ask, well the salon makes the money, not the individual. If you have received a good job, and you would tip normally, then go ahead.

I don't think you'll have to tip again... you're already paying plenty of money.

Wow, really? Cause I was totally thinking I needed to tip! These girls all work at the salon but they are coming to me. That would save me a ton if I didn't have to tip!

My hair and make up contract specifically states "gratuity not included." The stylists are coming to us and it's $675 for hair only (for 8 women) plus $30 per woman for makeup.

I was planning to tip 15%...

I know that frugal bride (via Rachel) says something else, but when the contract specifically states "gratuity not included," I feel obligated to tip.

My hair salon is doing my hair for $40.00 and my MOH for $30.00 so I am gonna tip $20.00. Makeup is being done for free but I can either make a small purchase or tip, we are gonna see what products they have then decide from there.

I have a real problem with tipping for hair services in general because you know that a portion is going to the salon but I've got to believe that majority is going to the stylist.

Mine is coming to me as well. She owns the business, and we are paying her to travel. Due to all of that, we probably will not tip her, because she is making 1000 plus that day for coming to do our wedding.

Generally you never tip the owner or someone doing freelance. All the money goes to them anyway. If you go to the salon on the day of the wedding then you have the option to tip as if you were going for your regular appointment. Of course in the end you just do what works for you or rather what you feel is appropriate.

Here is a little insight on tipping directly to a business owner/freelance artist. You are correct, all of the money goes directly to them. However, what you don't know is that the owner/freelance artist is more than likely paying a great amount of money in advertising to get your business. They must purchase professional makeup/hair products to perform your services. They must pay taxes and employees. They have paid hundreds of dollars to have a business license. They have also spent thousands of dollars on their education to be able to perform the best hair/makeup they can for you. That is just the money side. They are also spending countless hours responding to your emails/phone calls. They are planning and coordinating your wedding day and services down to the minute to make sure everything goes smoothly. I could go on and on. Please think about the individuals in the services industry. If owning a business was easy everyone would do it.
