Time Between Ceremony and Reception

Shannon, on October 18, 2019 at 8:41 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
I really don’t want there to be a ton of time in between the ceremony and reception as guests won’t have anything to do. We are getting married in a tourist town so there are some places they could go to in between. But my concern is I’m not giving myself enough time for pictures in between. We are going to do some bridesmaids and groomsmen pictures before the wedding (just not together) to save time, but we want to go to a few outdoor spots downtown to get some pictures as well. Our wedding is at 3:00pm and is a short 30 minute service. We will do some quick family portrait pictures at the church before getting on a party bus to take us downtown for more pictures. We don’t have to be at the reception until 6:00pm which is right in town, and guests have cocktail hour beginning at 5:00pm. Is this going to be enough time? Thanks!

That’s way more than enough time. Most couples have a 60 minute cocktail hour to take photos, that’s what cocktail hour is for. I would strongly advise against giving your guests an hour and a half with nothing to do. You really don’t need 2.5 hours for photos.

I would be worried that your guests will be finished at 3:30 and not have the cocktail hour until 5:00. That’s a long time for people to have nothing to do. And you shouldn’t need 2.5 hours for pictures.

Yeah that’s plenty of time. We had an hour and a half in between with a 30 minute drive from the ceremony and the reception venue. It was way more than enough time.

An hour should be fine! Your photographer will likely be used to taking photos in that time span
