Three Buck Chuck or Three Wishes???

Pinky Winter Promise, on October 4, 2015 at 9:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

Hope everyone is doing well..

I am trying to figure out what wine to serve at the wedding. (We are having wine, beer, hard cider, and probably two kids of sangria).

I'm wondering if any one of you have had both Three Buck Chuck (Trade Joes) and Three Wishes (Whole Foods). If you have, which one do you prefer?

All and any input would be great! Thanks!

Zoe - I just read that page... so you are thinking a mixture of the two?

I love three wishes, but I will have to grab a bottle of the 3 buck chuck next time I am at TJ's to compare.

FWIW, I'm a Sommelier if that gives my opinion any merit to you. Both are from Charles Shaw, so some speculate that it's the same wine in different bottles. Therefore, I say choose the nicer bottle -- Three Wishes.

Wasn't it the Three Buck Chuck white wine that had a lot of arsenic in it?

Never tried three buck chuck but I do love three wishes!! Both the white and red varieties, and I generally am a red-only wine drinker! If you're confused and can't decide, I would get a mixture of both! Not like the price is going to be an issue hahah!

Unless your guests are all 21-22 I would avoid Three Buck Chuck lol. I loved it in college (when it was still Two Buck Chuck) but I wouldn't drink it now.

So I do have some "wine snobs" - is there any way I can make the majority of them happy and find affordable wine (something that won't break the bank)???

You can get better wine than that for like, 2 bucks more. Talk to a liquor store owner or a sommelier.

If you are having sangria, I would drink that. And then you can put whatever type of wine you want in it and no one will know.

Personally I would look for a sale and/or get your bulk discount. You can get some more palatable wines if you're willing to go up to even $6 a bottle. Ask at the wine store and see what they recommend.

ETA: Yeah, what m said Smiley smile

If you're looking for value brands that are a step up from Three Wishes, may I recommend CK Mondavi wines -- best cheap wines out, and they offer more varietals than just Cab, Chard & Merlot. Amongst your cheap wines, these varietals are not typically great performers. You may have better luck with Pinot Grigio or Sauv Blanc for your whites, and perhaps a Malbec or Zinfandel for your reds. These varietals are better suited to less expensive wines. If you have a reputable liquor ship in your area, ask about their South American wines. Best bang for your buck in today's market. You can find something from Chile or Argentina for under $8 that will knock your socks off.

Sangria is made by the caterer at a set price (so I can't choose what he makes it with - though it's probably cheap wine). I also have about (estimating) 150 people to provide wine (and beer) for (our venue doesn't allow liquor). I'm just worried about wine getting expensive really quick. I will go and talk to our wine store (the most I have seen is 10% off by where I live)..

Honestly - I can't tell you what winery/brand the wine I've had at weddings.. I just have always seen them posted as the type, not any more details than that.

m - do you have any suggestions for wine that is $2 more??

No, it all depends on availability of distributors in your area - talk to someone at the store! Promise. They will help you!

    Thanks Zoe!

I'll be sure to go get a bottle and try one. I think Harris Teeter stocks them and maybe our local wine warehouse does..
