Thoughts on Stock the Bar parties?

I just recently heard about stock the bar parties. I friend of mine mentioned they went to one where, instead of a traditional bridal or wedding shower, they did a co-ed party where they received alcohol or alcohol related gifts. She said it was for their wedding reception bar. Initially I was like, what a cool idea instead of your standard shower gift. Our bar at our venue doesn't supply the alcohol so I was thinking that it would be a big help.



But, then I got to reading and thinking...Is this in poor taste or tacky to do? We were originally planning to purchase our alcohol, but thought the added help would be nice. But its it wrong to have guests basically buy their own alcohol for the reception?! I am now unsure about the idea even with my family/friends/ guests being pretty laid back people. I am reading that the "stock the bar" is more for your personal bar (which is still a really cool idea in my opinion). Hmmm..
Has anyone thought of or done a stock the bar themed party? How did you go about it? Or should I just trash the idea? LOL
