This may sound wierd, but does anyone know how to keep apples from turning brown?

SCheecks, on September 8, 2009 at 6:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

Hi ladies, my mom came up with a really cool idea and I want to go for it. She said that maybe I should serve caramel apples at my reception and I loved the idea, the thing is my grandma loves caramel apples but she can't chew them. So I was gonna have apple slices and let people dip it in caramel. So how can I keep them from going brown? Thanks ladiesSmiley smile

You can try squirting a little lemon juice on the white part of the apple. That usually keeps them from turning brown.

    Other methods than using lemon.

Lemon juice works, but you would need a lot of it and it can change the flavor. For an easier, less messy, and flavor-less solution, get some Vitamin C tablets, grind them up really fine, and dissolve the powder in water. Then as SOON as you cut the apples drop them in the Vitamin C bath. Basically it's the Vitamin C in the lemon juice that is stopping the oxidation process that will turn the apples brown, so why not go right to the source?

    Hello..

a little bit of salt works great! Just soak the apples in salt water, and they won't turn brown. Just a pinch or your going to get salty apples =)

Lemon juice. But anything with citric acid will do the trick! My boss at work likes to put 7up or Sprite on her apples.

Weliz recommends what commercial apple slice sellers use: ascorbic acid.

As laadeedah said, ascorbic acid works very well. Ask your pharmacist for it. If they don't have it, they should be able to point you in the right direction. It is usually less expensive than lemon juice and doesn't affect the flavor of the apples. Yes, it is the same ingredient as is in Vit C tablets.

Have you thought about having whole apples for all your other guests and just giving your grandmother the sliced apples? I have purchased sliced apples in little baggies before at the grocery store. Super Walmart carries them in the produce section. They are sealed in little baggies and come with little containers of caramel for dipping. Just a thought so you don't have to worry about keeping all of the apples from turning brown, but your grandmother could still enjoy them.

What about something like this? http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=50565 (they use melted chips, but caramel would work just fine) It may be a bit more time consuming then slices, but you won't have to worry about them turning brown, and they can be all prepared on toothpicks/sticks so there is less chance for mess as your guests won't have to do the dipping. A bit more refined, and grandma can enjoy them too!
