The Wedding Cake or Ice Cream?

So we had a tasting several months ago and we chose a four tier white cake with lemon filling (every other tier has filling) for the wedding cake. We also picked a two tier (feeds about 50) german chocolate cake. Fiance loves german chocoate, but he wasn’t really pushing for a cake. I just went in thinking we “had” to do one, so that if people don’t like white cake, they can have chocolate - and they have been at most weddings that I have been to. Design wise, its really plain - fiance isn’t really into sports designs or hobby cakes - its just plain with strawberries and a monogram.

Problem is, I did NOT want to spend a ton of money on a cake - it ended up being almost $1,000. I get it, they are delivering it, we have two cakes, its going to be hot, we are using their cake stands - but I just could not believe the price for two very simple cakes. It has very little decoration and my florist is the one putting the flowers on it, so I already feel like we are spending way too much on it, but I’ve checked with other places and prices were about the same. I am thinking of getting rid of the grooms cake to help cut cost, because I really don’t want to spend $250 on his, when he doesn’t really seem to care either (he wasn’t really familiar with grooms cakes being a thing) BUT he thinks that most people will be disappointed that we only have one flavor of cake. However, we will have an ice cream sundae bar catered later in the evening. I feel like I am being crazy and we do have a cake contract, but they do allow for changes and removals, so I’m not stuck with having to pay for it if we end up just having one cake. So would you be disappointed if you came to my wedding and didn’t get chocolate cake lol?

You definitely don't need two cakes, especially if you are also offering other dessert options.

I think you will be fine, as long as there is a cake. If I were a guest and I saw an ice cream sundae bar, I would want some cake to top off my dessert creation.

If you want another flavor, does your bakery do sheet cakes? We did a small three-tier cake with all one flavor, then did two sheet cakes from the same bakery with two different flavors. Our guests had a choice of three different cake flavors, and while we did have decent amount left over we also ordered about 40 to 50 extra slices compared to the guest list that we had. We bought enough cake for around 150 guests, we had 100ish guests, and we spent about $500 on cake.

I wouldn't be disappointed if I didn't get chocolate cake. I would LOVE cake though: traditional cake, cake pops or cupcakes. If you want more options would a smaller cake + chocolate cupcakes or cake pops help with the budget?
