The Roaring 20s themed wedding

FutureMrs.Ruffalo, on July 30, 2016 at 6:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 28

Hi everyone! I'm going to try out this discussion again but hopefully I'll receive tips this time. We are having a Roaring 20s/Art Deco themed wedding. Has anyone ever gone to one before and if so, what ideas did the couple have? The small details really make the difference and I'm curious to know what's out there! We are already having cigarette girls (see photo) pass out appetizers for cocktail hour and having a band for the first 3 hours. Thank you in advance!

Glad you somewhat saw the light and are no longer calling it "Gatsby" themed. I still stand by what I said before, themed weddings work best when done tastefully in small doses. Otherwise, it ends up looking like kid's birthday party.

Ahh see now this is much more romantic :-) I googled "Roaring 20's wedding" for you and found some ways to incorporate this.

Honestly I feel like you'd need a big budget to do this and not make it tacky/kids birthday/promy. I think 20s theme is awesome if it's really classy. Like no skimping. I know gatsby is frowned upon for a theme but you can still use the style for reference. Glittery gowns, updos, classy music, lights.... Things like that. But don't use gatsby (or bond) specific references.

We are doing an "end of prohibition" themed wedding. We just sent out invitations that are 1920 newspaper invites. We have a paper moon backdrop with a bride and groom papermoom cake topper. We are having my nephew dress like a news boy to hand out the program and a craft cocktail bar that will be dressed the same. We have a live band playing jazz for 3 hours as well!

August, I disagree that it would be very expensive. I think with a theme like this, a little goes a long way.

I've never been to a wedding themed like this, but I would suggest maybe looking at antique shops for decor. I was actually at one today and saw quite a bit of 1920's items! Clothing was a big thing, so if you really want to go all out maybe look into vintage black tie styled suits for the men and maybe even the loose flapper dresses with the feathered headbands and long pearled necklaces for the ladies. You can even style with the make-up as well. This might be more of a shower idea, but a silent movie or posters for silent movies. Maybe put up art deco stained glass on tables for decor... Maybe look at movies like Singing in the Rain, or the stereotypical Great Gatsby for inspiration? There is a lot that you can do with a theme like this! I hope this helps! Happy Planning!

I don't think I was around for your first post on this, but I have been to a roaring 20s themed wedding and it was A LOT of fun. The wedding was small under 70 I would say most people even got into it including the brides grandparents, her grandma had her hair done up and was wearing pearls. They had their cocktail hour in a museum that featured period paintings which I am guessing was expensive but set the mood, then the reception was tented outside on the lawn, they had cigarette girls come by...but they were cigars not cigarettes I do remember it being smoky and not enjoying that one aspect. They had a band that dressed up, and her dress was vintage and beautiful. I can't remember a lot of the details though it has been about 7 years, it was really lovely and fun...I do remember they had some great cocktails. I hope your wedding is a success.

    EMILY NO!

We just got her away from The Great Gatsby because of the infidelity and murder themes.... Don't suggest unromantic awful themes for weddings....

Sass- maybe you're right, I've never looked into it. Just the amount of research and everything going into it to make it not look tacky, and how glitzy everything was back then just makes me think $$$

We are doing an Art Deco/nouveau inspired wedding and are renting antique furniture/rugs to create seating areas around the dance floor. (My grandma will be parked there all night and I thought it would be a great way for her to feel a part of it all, without having to sit at a table the whole time.)

@August I don't think it'd be more expensive if done right. For example, feather centerpieces would likely be cheaper than using flowers.

@OP we're planning a "Goodbye Roaring 20's" birthday party for my sister who's turning 30 next month, here's an inspiration for her cake!

@Mrs.Sasswood Oh, sorry! I hadn't seen that! Shoot! You know, it did pain me to type Gatsby because it really is so over done. So, OP, I take that back, do not look at Gatsby for ideas!

If the band won't be there for all of the reception, think about playing Postmodern Jukebox while the band is off. They have some amazing covers of contemporary songs and a lot of them are given a 20s feel. Granted, it wouldn't be very authentic to the time, but might be a fun way to blend modern day stuff with that decade.

I'm doing a vintage Hollywood wedding. So think high fashion, vintage decadent with some rough mixed metals.

    These are the invites.

I would incorporate feathers into tall centerpieces! Something like this.

We're doing art deco and found some amazing invites/day of paper products on Minted. Specifically the designer GeekInk. Smiley smile

I'm leaning away from 20's for the rest of the wedding because I want the don't want it to be to overdone, but I told my girls and I know they're going to have their hair and makeup done in a 20s style. It suites them both anyways.
