The Little People

AEW, on August 2, 2019 at 10:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

Hi Hi

What are your thoughts about kids attending your events? I have several nieces, nephews and cousins under the age of 12 that I have taken into consideration with all the planning. I can understand if you're having a big formal 5 course shindig, but our wedding is on the small side and will be on a beach.

The caterer has assured me that there's no additional cost for my little guest but that didn't really matter for me. I would rather spend the money for them than not have the entire family not be there because no one could watch the babies.

Are you expecting little people at your event? What can I do to make them actually enjoy the day like the big kids?

Our nieces will be there, but inviting the children of all of our guests would have put us way over budget. We aren’t really doing anything specifically for the kids because I know they’ll have fun playing and dancing together, but a kid’s table with coloring books and activities could be a good idea.

I'm inviting them. I was thinking of coloring books but I'm well over a year out so I won't worry until I'm closer.

I talked to FH about getting like a card table for the older kids. There will be about 4 of them. The others are younger than 5 so they'll likely be with their parents and I won't have to worry about covering the cost for additional chairs. I guess it will come down to how many rsvps we actually get before we can add them to the seating count.

I was thinking about maybe telling their parents they could always bring the beach stuff for them, but then who will be watching them in the water as they play? So I'll have to come up with some dry alternatives to keep them all entertained.

We had a formal event with a 5 course meal and invited kids. A few of them spent the whole night on the dance floor. We didn’t do anything special to entertain them.

No kids. I have save the dates out way in advance. I think most of my friends will relish in the day off 😉

I agree with the day off thing, but I don't think my day would be the same without my lil ones. I've been away from them for a minute so it will be nice to see all their cute chubby faces lol

I’m a teacher. I love kids. However, I will absolutely not have them at my wedding. Mostly because I’m a teacher and don’t want to feel like I’m working on my wedding day (and it saves a bunch for the budget). We don’t have any nieces and nephews and most of the extended family children are old enough to either stay home alone or my cousins have easy access to free babysitters. It shouldn’t be too big of a deal.

That being said, I have tons of ideas! The card table could be great-board and card games are usually a hit (the slightly older ones LOVE UNO and Apples to Apples (I do the Junior version for the 7th graders). Coloring pages or just plain paper are also good. Mad Libs are fun (you could do wedding ones!) and can be printed online. They may come prepared with cellphones or portable gaming devices (I know they do to class 🙄) and you wouldn’t have to worry about anything!

We had a semi formal reception with 9 kids. We had a kids table for them. They had goodie bags filled with candies and glowsticks.

    I completely understand Rebecca lol

I like the idea of having some games there that they could use. Game nights are a family tradition and won't be hard to incorporate during the reception. Heck, I may even join them for a round of UNO or 2 lol

We're having a Friday afternoon wedding when school's still going on for kids. We'll probably have a dozen or so, though!

Our plans for our wedding so far are shaping up to be pretty fancy shmancy, but will take place at the botanical garden affiliated with and across the street from a theme park. With that in mind, we are having children at the wedding (how can we not) and will provide every kid who wants one a clipboard with coloring sheets and a small box of crayons for the ceremony. We haven't thought yet about what to do at the reception but I'm sure we'll have extra sheets and crayons in addition to small table games like tic tac toe or Connect 4. I dont think we'll have anyone under 4 or 5.

Also, our vendor has kids meals for 12 kids and under for 25 dollars and people will have the option to go to the theme park the next day with us.

For me since most my guests are traveling 1 or more hours. I'm allowing kids. I'm not using fine
China so we'll be ok. There's a beautiful grass
and garden area. All parents are responsible
for their children. But I respect each Bride and Groom decisions.

Our rough estimate is 20 kids. My plan is to hire babysitters/nannies and have a little like “kids corner” at the reception. For the ceremony I’ll probably set up a small kids table with crayons or something, idk yet. We do have to pay for our little guests meals but that perfectly fine with us. We have kids and I honestly couldn’t imagine my wedding without at least a bunch of kids running around lol

We're having no kids outside of those in the wedding because that would've added 30 more heads to our catering count regardless of age. The only unspoken exception to the rule we're making is for my FH's godson who is on the autism spectrum- we wanted to give the parents as many options as possible.

For all 4 kids (1 flower girl, 2 ring bearers, and FHs godson), we're making them goody bags full of snacks and activities.

We’re having two kids, my niece(5) and my friend’s daughter(10), honestly our wedding isn’t a fancy grown up event so we’re not doing anything special for the kiddos. They get to dance and eat chicken and pig out on sweets like the rest of us.
