The Inner Envelope?

Morgan, on December 21, 2016 at 8:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

I have not put much thought into our stationary, and today when I started researching I found out that there are MANY things included in the invitation suite. I understand the need for most of them, but an inner envelope? To me, it seems like a waste of paper and money.

What do you think? Do I have to have an inner envelope?

Update: We are not inviting any children to the wedding, so it would mostly be couples/family members of ours.

You don't HAVE to do anything but, it is a nice addition particularly when addressing invites to families with children. That way you can put "Mr & Mrs Doe & Family" on the outer envelope and then write out everyone's names on the inner. It's also nice if you're offering a plus one. Then you address the outer to the person you're sending it to and then on the inner write their name followed by "and guest."

Is the inner envelope supposed to be for the rsvp card? If so, you can save on that by just doing an online rsvp--WW has a great feature on their wedding websites that lets you do this easily.

Not needed. I accidentally screwed up my envelopes by putting my stamps on the inner envelopes. I freaked out but everyone here said to just skip the outer ones and that's what I did. Never heard a word about it from my guests.

I don't think you have to but it helps protect the invitation and it's a place to list out names of those invited. So on the front you would put Smith Family and the inside would list everyone by name.

This is probably a silly question, but what is an inner envelope? Is it not the rsvp card envelope?

It's unnecessary and a waste of money. People will just toss it aside, if not in the garbage, when they receive it. Plus, it adds weight so it might cost more to ship.

@Rachel, thanks! That does seem completely unnecessary.

Thank you all! I feel a lot better. Reading some of those wedding websites made me think I was going to go crazy. I am glad a lot of people have disregarded the inner envelope.

Our invites were one card with online RSVP. Saved the tress and money. Let's face it. They all ended up in the trash eventually.

They are unnecessary, but are generally used more often as the event reaches more formal levels. For instance, a casual beach wedding has zero need for inner envelopes, while an invitation for a formal, ballroom wedding better conveys the formality of the event when an inner and outer envelope is used.

We actually will be doing inner and outer envelopes with liners, largely because we both like that it gives the invitations a cleaner, more polished look.

Our invitations came with them and we used them although you don't have to do so. We had the return address pre-printed and they only do it on the outer envelope. Additionally the inner envelopes Aldo's not have glue on them.

Not needed but I would notice. Weigh your options! Smiley winking
