The Groom's Ring?

Monkinonk, on January 26, 2018 at 8:02 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 29

It's getting to be time to purchase a ring for my FH, and I realized-- I have no idea where to start looking?

He would like one of those thick black ones, and I'm hoping to ask him if he'd be willing to have a strip of rose gold to tie our rings together. But I really have no idea where to start looking to send him examples of rings that he might like. Which I guess brings up a few more questions.

1. What is groom ring etiquette? did you surprise your FH/ now-hubby with a style (like an engagement ring? I have no real clue.) or did he pick it with you?

2. What is the average cost of a groom's ring?

3. Where did you purchase it?

My FH wants tungsten carbide and a Qalo band. I've tried asking if he wants bands of other metals, engraving, what thickness.... no, no, and no idea! I feel bad because he picks out beautiful pieces of jewelry for me without any input or guidance. We decided we're going to go look at bands for him in the next few weeks during Valentine's Day sales, and from there I'll buy one for him. I'd like to buy from a local jeweler but chains like Jared and Hannoush have been around for a long time for a reason.

The cost is dependent on the material and level of detail, but I'm pretty sure what you're describing is a cheaper metal, around $150-$200.

We picked our bands out together. Ours don’t match at all. It seems, according to our jeweler that matching bands are going out of style. For his ring, it all depends on what he wants. If it’s a darker band then it’s probably tungsten, titanium or colbolt. They are a lot less expensive than gold. Titanium is lighter and more dorable than tungsten. DH has titanium. It was about $200 at the same jeweler that designed my ering and band.

    1. I think it depends on the couple. Me and FH found his while just browsing at a Italian owned Jewelry store. I'm able to get his for 2100 as opposed to 2900, because we're doing a combo deal with some other pieces. That is kinda higher than alot of men's rings though.(His ring is yellow gold, and has a diamond on the middle) Some brides on her spend 17, 50, or 200-300 dollars. It sounds like his taste is pretty affordable.

My FH also wanted a think black ring, but after speaking with several jewelry stores I decided he needed to come with me because the selection on that type of ring was frankly very small. He ended up going the opposite direction with a simple 6mm gold band, I’m glad he came with me so he could try different options and pick what he really likes on him. It was about $800

It's a personal decision that couples make as to whether the groom picks his own ring, the couple picks it together, or the groom wants to be surprised. My DH wanted to be surprised. We did browse some jewelry stores together so he could get an idea for what he liked, and he sent me lots of inspiration pics of styles he liked, but he told me he wanted me to pick and surprise him because he wanted the experience of being surprised by a ring like I got when he picked my e-ring.

I'm not sure what the average cost is, but I can tell you I spent around $340. I purchased while they had a sale promotion going on. The ring is titanium with an exotic wood inlay. I ordered from Stonebrook Jewelry.

FH and I picked it out together and we got it from the same place he bought my e-ring which was Helzbergs. He wanted a yellow gold ring with some diamonds and we were able to find one that had yellow and white gold which help tie it into my rings. His ring cost about $1800.00

FH and I picked out our bands together. He knew he wanted a tantalum ring and I knew I wanted a diamond band. We went to a local jeweler when they were having an event where they had companies in with more ring options then what are usually in the case.

FH and I had talked about it and agreed that since he has to wear his ring everyday that he should be able to pick out the one he wants, so that is what we did.

I don't have advise on where to look for a ring like that. I assume all jewelers and websites would carry something like that. FH and I picked out our rings together. We went to the jeweler who did my engagement ring and he helped us pick out rings that look like they belong in a set. They don't match, but it was important to us that they didn't look too different. They rings we looked at for him before going back to the jeweler were around $800, the ring he settled on ending up being $1200. I think that is a little higher than average but he loves it so its worth it.

We went together to pick out our wedding bands. He wanted something traditional, and picked out a plain 5mm 14k white gold band. It was $495.

We went and looked at bands together, but we each ultimately picked our own out. He picked out a brushed 14K yellow gold band which was $1100. We bought our bands on Black Friday with coupons that our jeweler sent out, so it ended up being $825 before tax.

The is no etiquette around jewelry, no average cost. Cost depends on what the ring is made of and where you buy it. I’m of the belief that the person wearing it should pick it out, but that’s up to each person.

You would look anywhere you’d look for any other fine jeweley - a jewelry store. I’m sure if you google black men’s wedding ring you’ll find tons of pictures.

My husband and I shopped together for my engagement ring and we went back to the same jeweler for our wedding rings. He picked his and I picked mine. My rings are rose gold and he wanted some rose gold in his ring too. I personally didn’t care, just as long as he liked his ring is was fine with me.

My husband pick out and bought his when he bought my engagement ring and wedding band. He had it before he even asked me to marry him. I guess he was pretty sure that I would say yes lol. He saw one he loved and since it was very different and coordinated with my ring he went ahead and got it. He was afraid he would never find one like it again. It's rose gold with white and black diamonds.

We picked out our wedding bands together. I paid for his and he paid for mine. We got them from a private jeweler who is a family friend, who also did my engagement ring. My H asked me to be very specific about what I wanted for an engagement ring, and he got me exactly what I wanted, so I wanted to make sure his ring was exactly what he wanted, not what I wanted for him. Like a strip of pink metal in it.

Your rings do not have to "tie together", they should just be what each of you want individually. I don't know anyone who has matching rings with their spouse. I would not ask him to put rose gold in his ring either, but that's just me.

My H's ring is 14k white gold, with a dual finish, like the picture. It was $750. Our jeweler sent us to this site to look for style inspiration http://www.uniquesettings.com/

I bought my FH’s on Etsy. It’s an old Irish silver coin made into a ring. It’s currently on its way from the UK. It cost me about $80, with shipping.

Black tungsten would probably be your best bet. FH and I picked our bands out together, we decided it was something we'd both be wearing every day, we should each get to have input on it.

Etsy has countless design/options/pricing. Since so many shops produce and sell wedding bands, pricing is pretty competitive and relatively low compared to what we found in stores near us. Just make sure to read through all the customer reviews and look for comments on quality.

A couple options from a seller in Beverly Hills:

Black Tungsten Band With Rose Gold Inlay

Black Tungsten Band With Rose Gold Stepped Edges

I'm certainly not going to make him match with me if he doesn't want to. I personally like the idea of having some way to tie them together since the marriage bond is also a religious thing for us (becoming one and all that, so there's a bit of personal symbolism there for us) but I understand he might not want something matchy-matchy. If he doesn't want it, I wont stress it. His father actually wears a rose gold ring and it certainly works for him, but to each his own! I wouldn't make a decision without talking to him about it first, even if he hasn't seen the exact ring, but I'd like to find suggestions to show him. Originally we discussed black and red, which is pretty awesome too.

What about online sources? Has anyone ordered online?

The Gem Expo happens in the DC area around Dulles Airport three times a year. The next one happens to be Valentine's Day weekend. FH and I are planning on going to look for a wedding band for him since I already I already have my band designed and customed. That way, he can choose a design he likes, try it on for size, and gets to feel pampered for the day.

I got FHs ring from revolution jewelry. It’s damascus steel and he loved it. He picked it out and I paid for it. I figured he bought mine so I should buy his. It was $425 total. Ours don’t match even in the slightest but it doesn’t matter to me
