The Food: boring and coherent or fun and all over the place?

Amy, on October 16, 2018 at 5:14 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11

We are doing stations so we can either do something a bit more coherent (i.e a carving station with mashed potato bar that works together well and maybe a pasta bar for the veg option) or have more fun but kind of all over the place options (like a stir fry and grilled cheese station)?

I know Im more inclined to pick more fun, all over the place options but realize some people may not want to eat a bit of this and that. They will be sitting since it's a full meal and not just passed apps so I'm torn.

Mashed potatoes and meat and pasta just feels... boring to me (apologies, I'm sure it's absolutely lovely for those that don't share my opinion, not trying to put it down per say!) but all the more unique options my caterer provides just don't go with each other!!

I think do what you and your FH want! If you two are fun and everywhere then go with that! Or if you want a more traditional reception & that fits your theme more then go with the classics. I think you'll always have guests that would have rather had something else no matter what you have so make it about you, yes you are hosting guests but ultimately you're the ones footing the bill so have what you want to make your own wedding memorable!

I also say do what you guys want. I'm sure your guests will not be surprised by the "this and that" meal and probably think it was very YOU! Fun and unique!

If you were a more traditional, classic person, they would probably be expecting a more traditional, classic meal.

Thanks! I'm wondering how much of this is also a result of me looking at the menu when Im hungry....Gosh I want EVERYTHING right now. And the thought of not getting twice as much food as we need feels devastating....

    I think I need dinner.

I don’t think there’s anything boring about a cohesive meal. If you’re concerned with doing something “fun” you can have a more “interesting” cohesive meal without going totally boring/cookie cutter.

Im personally not a fan of the “all over the place” option especially for a wedding, and ESPECIALLY if it’s a buffet set up and I don’t really know what’s on offer til I’m going through the line. Then I just grab whatever looks interesting in the moment and by the time I sit down I look at my plate and it’s like “what the heck did I do, this isn’t a meal?!” It doesn’t have to be perfect counterparts, but I don’t want to end up with things that once they’re on my plate taste gross next to one another! Good way to end up wasting food, in my opinion.

Maybe your caterer can work with you to make a more fun cohesive menu? I know mine were super flexible and able to change dishes around for us so they worked better for us and our interests!

So it won't be a buffet line at least, it'll be separate stations people can go up to that are apart from each other and each is a meal on its own. Like the grilled cheese bar has topping options and is served with soup. The stir fry has veggies and protein options. Both are stand-alone meals, not like things you have sitting together on one plate. Imagine it more like offering three super different meal options.

I totally want stir fry and grilled cheese. My FH just told me I am not allowed to make food decision while hungry because it's a recipe for disaster but I feel like I will pick the tastiest things when hungry.

I think this is totally fine! Since it's stations, people will probably look around first and then decide what they want to eat. A little of this, a little of that. Keeps it interesting. As long as there is something somewhat traditional for your less adventurous / more traditional eaters, you should be fine.

I saw this done at a wedding and it went over well. I think they had a sushi station and an Italian station and... 2 more that I can't remember. People will eat what they want. At this particular wedding, they also had a different cocktail for each station, something that matched the food. It was super fun.

Do whatever you want! Personally I’d be stoked!! We did a more traditional meal but had more fun with our apps to show more of our personality.

I think the all over the place sounds great. I am not a fan of the stabdard wedding food. Nothing wrong with it. Just now a fan. I think some cool different stations would be awesome. I am having a gourmet pizza truck so I definitely like out of the box. Lol

The fun options sounds....well FUN! However if you are concerned about guests opinions you could do maybe a late night fun snack at the end or even a food truck!

We are doing the normal stations and fun ones as well. We picked what we want to eat and also some that are kinda plain for the not so adventurous type (my mom).

You have to do what works for you and that you can afford. People can have chicken and potatoes at home or another wedding anytime, but when are they going to have something fun and delicious that you don't see everyday? Probably not very often.
