The Dress - Do I wear it twice??

sbarr6, on April 25, 2017 at 2:05 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

We are having an intimate destination wedding (immediate family only), followed by a reception in my hometown 2 weeks later for 150 guests. I went with a simple, flowy dress, great for the beach, and could work for the reception. (Reception will be at a country club.) Should I wear it again because people will want to see "the dress"? Or should it only be worn once, and should I get a fun white cocktail dress for the reception? (That's the direction I'm leaning, but just not sure!) Another idea being tossed around is to alter the dress after the wedding, making it into a shorter, flowy party dress for the reception... is that too risky? What if it doesn't turn out? Some have suggested wearing the dress and changing halfway through the night - I don't think I want to do that. I do plan to have a few photos/canvas prints of the wedding day to display at the reception. I'd love to hear your opinions!

If you can afford to have a different dress, I'd go that route. If people want to "see the dress" they can wait for pictures.

I think you should totally wear it twice! I would love to have a second chance to wear and show off my dress!

Honestly, I would jump at the opportunity to wear my wedding dress twice. I say wear it again, if you want to!

I wouldn't alter this dress - it's beautiful the way it is! I would personally wear a cocktail dress if there is going to be dancing. It's not because I think it should only be worn once, because I would wear my dress every day if I could. But if it's a more casual, party atmosphere at the 'reception', then that's the way I would go.

I'd personally wear it twice, probably with different hair and accessories, not for my guests but because I loved my dress and want to spend more time in it. However if you are leaning towards getting a second dress and have the budget, go for it!

I would wear the dress again.

I went to a reception like this many years ago; everyone wanted to see the bride in her dress...which she wore.

Honestly, I'd wear it twice. But, I wear most dresses I buy to as many occasions as I can. I get that a wedding dress is different than a christmas party dress, but I'd still want to get like... all my money out of it.

I might have said differently if it were a full on ball gown, but I think that dress would be appropriate for a country club shindig.

Totally up to you! If you want to wear it again - go for it! But if you want to wear a different dress, do that Smiley smile

I'm in a kind of (but also different) boat. We're having an intimate wedding this year (only immediate family, grandparents, and possibly our MOH and BM and their dates) followed by a larger vow renewal in 2-3 yrs with all of the family and friends we wanted to invite this year present. Because in my case there's a few years of a gap, I'll probably go with a new dress since I doubt my dress will fit me then.

For you, since you're doing a reception and it's (presumably) within a few months of the wedding, I'd probably wear my wedding dress a second time for a while (because I love my dress!) and then after dinner change into a cocktail dress for dancing. Best of both worlds!

I kinda like the idea of altering it into a different dress to wear for that night!

I think etiquette-wise, you aren't supposed to. But I don't think I know anyone who actually cares about that rule. It's a gorgeous dress. One of my friends did a DW in FL and came back and had a reception and wore the dress. She was pretty happy to put it on again.

Also, you could do different accessories and a different hairstyle to really get a different look out of it.

I've been to two wedding receptions where the couple had a destination wedding first, then came back and we celebrated together. Both times the bride wore her dress and it was just as wonderful, I'd jump at the opportunity to wear my dress twice. In fact, I'm going to wear it until I have to go back to work on Wednesday... deal with that world Smiley tongue
