The Dr Phil Show! Negotiable Infidelity!

jess-counting-down, on October 31, 2010 at 12:18 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

Yesterday I was watching the Dr phil show two part show about Negotiable infidelity? This man wanted to have his wife and his girl friend. There was a lady on there author of the book sugar babe about negotiable acts during marriage she said you have to have variety in a marriage or it will end in divorce quickly cause men and women get bored. How many of you ladies after years of marriage 5, 10, 20 years would EVER consider looking outside or allowing your Spouse to explore outside of the marriage for the sake of saving it? I personally would never do it but I am interested in peoples opinions on this or if they would ever even think twice about it? I am just trying to understand it.

I think that is crazy! Why get married in the first place? I guess it's to each it's own!

I agree...with Anthony & Christina...there are many different ways of keeping things fresh that don't involve bringing someone else into the equation. Yes, there are people who enjoy the company of a third person or even more, but that has to be a truly mutual decision. There are plenty of people who enjoy sex with one person their entire lives....the key really is communication and being able to tell your partner when you want to try something new or different or when something isn't working for you sexually.

    1. I don't think much of Dr. Phil in general.

    2. I was married before for 20 years. Even when he became unwilling/unable to continue to have sex with him, I stayed faithful to him. He was the one who decided to get divorced.

    3. I do know couples who are polyamorous. Even if each of you has another lover one night a week, say, there is a lot more to marriage than just having sex. Some polyamorous relationships seem to work well, others not so well. However, the people attempting them tend to be serious, honest with their partners, and committed to communication. I would not disparage that, even if it is not for me.

I agree with 2d about Dr. Phil, though I prefer to call him a dimwit...isn't his doctorate an honorary one?

@star yeah lol all new season

@christina I guess I could consider my self as a little jealous

@Karate Chick. Communication is the key but like 2d bride said what if they do it anyway do you leave? negotiate through it? give a second chance?

@2d bride I seen sisterwives on TLC I believe and I see that even though they are agreeable in the situation they still get a little jealous and emotional and it seems so painful.

Well, sisterwives is not exactly representative of all polyamorous relationships. Among other things, the sisterwives apparently don't get to have their own outside affairs.

In any event, I think that jealousy is common (though not universal) in polyamorous relationships. However, some couples seem to find such relationships worthwhile anyway. I guess after 57 years on this planet, I've given up on knowing what is best for anyone else's relationship. Knowing what's best for my own is hard enough!

Dr. Phil has a doctorate in psychology from North Texas State (pretty good school). About 1% of Americans have a doctorate of some kind, so it's unusual but not rare. Some people with doctorates are boneheads, some aren't. Smiley winking

I think there are other ways to keep your marriage fresh and not boring. I am not married but I have been with my FH for 8 years now. So far things are far from boring. I don't think that I could ever bring other people into the relationship b.c I do tend to get jealous easily with certain things. To each their own though.

Wow, that is very crazy, I wouldn't consider it because I would get jealous and hurt. I have also noticed the sister wives do get jealous and the husband seems okay with all of it. He seems like he wants his cake and eats it too. (Just my opinion/what I have observed).

In 2002 the CA board of pdychology determined that he did not require a license to practice because his show involves "entertainment" rather than psychology.

Dr. Phil does not act as a counseling psychologist would: he is merely and advice giver. He never gives people the TOOLS they need to solve problems in their lives which would allow them to solve current and future problems. Instead he TELLS the people what to do to fix that problem. As soon as the person has another problem they have no clue how to fix it. Dr. Phil sullies the field of psychology.

A couple weeks ago I heard a guy on the radio who wrote a book called "Cheat to Save Your Marriage" or something like that. He talked to many couples who have been through a similar situation- and for some of them, it actually did save the marriage. His 'research' (and I use that word lossely) showed that when a spouse was ALLLOWED to cheat, more often than not- it saved the marriage. I guess they realized how great what they had at home was...

I'm not buying it. Relationships get stale if you let them. You take someone for granted and wonder why they get bored. If you put half the work into the marriage as you did into hiding the cheating- you wouldn't be havnig problems to begin with...

Well, I know everyone is different but for me personally I would never do it. I was married before and never in our 18 years of marriage did I cheat on him and now that I'm married again, I wouldn't do it again. If I ever feel like I'm not happy I'll talk about it and get counseling (we) if needed.

I don't agree with cheating and I feel that it's an excuse. If I feel like things are getting stale I will suggest new things that do not include other people. We have already decided that this will be for life and we openly communicate about what we do and don't like. As someone said in their post marriage is just not about sex it is also about the way you communicate outside of the bedroom. Like my daddy always used to say "Sex only goes so far, when it's all said and done you still have bills to pay." If that makes any sense lol. You have to be able to work together in all aspects of marriage.

Don't most folks promise to be faithful to each other once they are married? Doesn't that mean anything? Fidelity is a non-negotiable. I need to be emotionally and physically and mentally safe with my partner. Infidelity can destroy all of that. I think our society makes it sound ok to be unfaithful..like it's exciting or something and it is not...ever!
