Thanksgiving Weekend?

Katie, on September 17, 2019 at 10:47 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 33

My boyfriend of 5 years & I recently got engaged and are starting our wedding planning. We want a Fall Wedding, but I work in politics, so anything before 11/3/20 is off the table. We also don't really want to wait TWO years for Fall 2021. How do people feel about Thanksgiving Weekend?

I know some people have things going on that weekend, but with a years notice is it enough? Also, I know travel is hectic that week, but we have a lot of friends that have moved out of state, so they're likely to be home for the holiday already, which would save them a plane ticket.

Is it a horrible idea, or decent option?

We went with the weekend before thanksgiving, to give ourselves a mini-moon the week of thanksgiving.
This was also literally due to the election. 🙄

If your wedding will be in your hometown where most friends will be traveling to anyway, it seems pretty convenient to me.

My parents got married the day before Thanksgiving (on a weekday) and they still had almost everyone show up! I think Thanksgiving weekend would be just fine Smiley smile

    Hahahaha
but for the record, I think thanksgiving is fine. We didn’t do it just because our venue didn’t have the date available so we were like, oh this is a perfect vacation opportunity!

I think it’s a great idea! Like you said, you are saving people additional travel costs since they are already planning to be in the area. And people are in such a great mood during the holidays!

My best friend did a cruise wedding in 2017 the week of thanksgiving. Our cruise set sail on Saturday prior. We docked at our first port on Monday in the grand Cayman and thats where she arranged to get married. They got married on that Monday and then used the rest of the cruise as their reception and honeymoon. It was quite fun and I had no issues with it an I even missed thanksgiving with my family lol. I think its a know your crowd. Just be prepared some people may not have this philosophy and may decline going because of timing but thats with any wedding. no wedding will be perfect for everyone! Smiley smile I say do what you'd like! Smiley smile

We went to a friends wedding last year on Black Friday. Most everyone already had off of work for the holiday weekend and they got a better rate since it was on a Friday. I say go for it!

We’re also doing the weekend before Thanksgiving. After thanksgiving my family would have been upset bc they have a lot of traditions they don’t want to give up.

I think it depends if guests are out of town/out of state. If most are in town, it's probably fine with a save the date sent 1 year out. It's also fine if you are okay with a larger amount of "no" RSVPs.

Other than considering if the election result will have any bearing on your psyche lol, but I like it! I think weddings near Holidays are great fun. Everyone is already in the festive spirit, and a happy event just adds to it!

We have a lot of friends who have moved out of state and figured that they may already be in town for Thanksgiving with their families & a slightly higher single round trip is still cheaper than 2 separate trips. Am I off base on that?

Also would need time to decompress from the absolute chaos that is an election cycle.

I think you might get a lot of declines for Thanksgiving weekend. People have their own holiday plans and traditions and family visiting from out of town, and might not be able to squeeze a wedding in, even if it’s in the same area with plenty of notice. I know I most likely wouldn’t be able to attend a Thanksgiving weekend wedding.
