My fiancé and I are thinking of doing our wedding on Thanksgiving or the day after. If you were invited to a wedding on one of these two days, would you come? (The wedding is international and the US residents typically will be traveling the farthest to attend, so we figured having it during a holiday would make it easier for people to travel/have days off work. And we do realize flights at that time are typically expensive.) Any thoughts greatly appreciated. We are trying to see what kind of arguments exist for or against the idea of this date.

No, Thanksgiving is a biggie for my in-laws and I wouldn't pass a holiday with them.

We are definitely inviting children! Yeah I don’t think people would be happy to fly during Thanksgiving and not bring their children with. Good point.

So a few follow up points. So when I say international, it’s in Mexico, but it’s not really a destination wedding because we are having the wedding where my fiancé and his family lives. A huge amount of my family is in transition right now including myself and my FH (I’m actually about to move back to the US from Austria) so we don’t really have a home base where we would want to have the wedding. We are generally inviting immediate family, closest friends, and aunts/uncles/cousins only. On my side, there are a significant number of family members (uncles/aunts/cousins) that wouldn’t be able to come because of finances regardless of where they had to fly to. The VIPs so far seem hip to the idea. (My parents are suuuuper excited).

I personally don’t care about Thanksgiving at all, but I looooove Black Friday shopping. Plus, Thanksgiving is so ridiculously expensive as a time to fly. I wouldn’t go to a wedding around thanksgiving. Our wedding is December 2nd because a few days before that is right when flights drop to a reasonable amount again and it’s a dead period and pretty cheap for flights and hotels. I understand the logic of already getting days off, though- that’s not a bad idea. I’m not sure if international flights skyrocket like they do in the US.

Only if you were my immediate family and it was local.(less than two hours) Thanksgiving is a family holiday and I'm not flying anywhere during that time, too much hassle and expensive. Driving far would be a nope too because of holiday traffic.

I have a friend that married on Black Friday. The only people that had a hard time participating were guests with retail jobs.
on the family end, it brought everyone together for thanksgiving the day before- which was like their rehersal dinner.

Even if the wedding is the day after Thanksgiving, it seems like your guests will then likely have to travel on Thanksgiving Day. Unless it were my wedding, I wouldn't go to a wedding scheduled this way....

One of my co-workers had her wedding thanksgiving weekend
    1. We were off work so it worked for her giving her extra time
    2. After the wedding they took a cruise and she said it was the cheapest time to take a cruise so they saved on their honeymoon

No way. Just the cost of the flights alone during Thanksgiving would deter me. For instance, a normal flight from DC-Fort Lauderdale is ~$150 roundtrip. During Thanksgiving last year, we couldn't find anything cheaper than ~$400 roundtrip. I almost told FH to tell him family I couldn't make due to illness.

Fortunately since the flight is to Mexico, the prices aren’t really any higher or lower one or two weeks after Thanksgiving verses around Thanksgiving Day. It depends on where you are flying from though. Obviously it’s cheaper to fly from Dallas than Seattle.

If it was my one of my family members yes I would be there because my whole family would be there as well. If it was one of my friends I don’t think I could. Family is first. I would have to spend that day with family.

Nope. Been invited to this exact weekend before (twice) and have always declined. Travel is expensive and difficult that weekend, and IMHO it comes across as selfish to ask your guests to leave their families and traditions to celebrate your wedding on such a major holiday.

If you fly the week before or after Thanksgiving, that wouldn't affect the normal price BUT if you plan to travel the weekend of Thanksgiving AND are flying a american airline, the flight is going to be expensive because of the amount extra they have to pay people to work on a major holiday. I assume, since you're flying from the US, you're taking an american airline so it wouldn't matter if you're flying TO Mexico if you're taking an american airline.

I was in Ireland for a wedding the day after Thanksgiving. My aunt and uncle (Irish) served the rehearsal dinner and basically made a full American Thanksgiving meal, complete with turkey, potatoes, stuffing, pies, all the good stuff! It was nice because my entire family was invited since it was my cousin's wedding, and yes having the days off really helped, because I flew out Tuesday night and only had to take Wed off of work.

That said, I would not be able to miss Thanksgiving with my family for a wedding unless you were one of my closest friends.
