Thanksgiving Wedding

FutureMrsR-M, on March 3, 2018 at 9:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 40
My fiancé and I are thinking of doing our wedding on Thanksgiving or the day after. If you were invited to a wedding on one of these two days, would you come? (The wedding is international and the US residents typically will be traveling the farthest to attend, so we figured having it during a holiday would make it easier for people to travel/have days off work. And we do realize flights at that time are typically expensive.) Any thoughts greatly appreciated. We are trying to see what kind of arguments exist for or against the idea of this date.

Nope. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, I wouldn't give it up to be at a wedding unless it was my sibling or best friend.

Thanksgiving is also one of, if not the most, expensive time of the year to fly.

Are they expensive going outside the US too? I would go, but mine is the 24th so I'm biasedXD

Thanksgiving is one of the most expensive times for air travel as you are aware. I think it depends how close you are to the people attending. If you have guests that work Retail, they will most likely not be allowed off on Black Friday. If it weren't internationally, I think it would be easier to have it at Thanksgiving. Have you asked any of your guests? Personally, and I've traveled alot, I'd not plan a destination wedding during a major holiday. Too many flight delays and a stressful time. Hope this helps. I'm sure your wedding will be gorgeous!!

Not at all, to be honest. Is there a particular reason you're going for this date?

We’re doing our’s the day before Thanksgiving this year. All of our VIPs know and are actually excited about it. The OOT guests (coming in as far as from Mexico) are super excited since it gives them a whole week to actually come and explore. It’s all going to depend on your crowd if they’re willing to spend it with you. One thing that sold it to us was that the venue we ended up getting was actually half off since it was a weekday wedding.

It would probably be *really* hard for a lot of people to get off of work the days around Thanskgiving. Unless you were immediate family, I honestly would not come.

I probably wouldn't unless it was an immediate family member.

Unless it was my brother getting married I wouldn't fly international for a wedding let alone over a major holiday.

I wouldn’t attend a wedding on Thanksgiving as it is a day I spend with family. I feel like it would be hard for you guys to celebrate anniversaries in the future as it will be consumed by the holiday.

I think you should ask your VIPS.

Most people would say the same about Christmas, and we're getting married on Christmas Eve, we asked our OOT family, and they are all thrilled to come. It really depends on your crowd.

Depends where your guests are from. In Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving at a different time than you guys do. So over American Thanksgiving would not bother me except if travel was outrageous, I wouldn't go. It would come down to cost.

If you want me to imagine would I go to a wedding over my Thanksgiving, probably not unless it was for close family. I want to be with my family on Thanksgiving.

ETA: I think if you choose to have a wedding over a holiday like Thanksgiving, I should interject that in my opinion it should be a must to invite children. You can't expect people to give up a family holiday and then not invite part of their family.

I'm honestly not sure. It sounds like a fun idea, but not only would it be expensive for guests to travel...I think it would be difficult to find a venue and vendors that would offer to work that day. If they do, I'm sure their prices would skyrocket.

Given that FI works in retail and can never get Black Friday off we wouldn’t be able swing this, even if it was family or friends we were very close with.

That being said, my parents got married on Thanksgiving back in 91. It was mostly a family affair and it was fun(I was 3 at the time so I was there). It’s a funny inside joke with my father too.

I think that as long as those you really want there can make it, you should be okay.
