Teenage daughter with body anxiety - Help!!

Kim, on January 21, 2021 at 6:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
I have a sweet, beautiful 15-year-old daughter who is at the very body-concious stage where she is happiest to not stand out a d not be noticed. Wearing leggings and a hoodie is her "safety" and most comfortable clothes.

She tried on a dress for me today and had an absolute meltdown after taking the dress off (which she looked gorgeous in) I made sure it was a dress to cover most of her body but still flattering. What are alternatives she could wear for our casual spring, outdoor wedding?? My dress is a dusty pink so she certainly can't "out do me" with whatever we find for her! Lol

If she prefers pants, then let her choose some pants in a style and color she feels comfortable in. When you go shopping again, try not to focus on "wedding appropriate" but make it more about finding something nice that will be as comfortable as her favorite leggings and hoodie. If you allow her the agency to choose, she will find something and be thankful you aren't forcing her to wear something for you instead of her.

What about a jumper rather than a dress?

Maybe let her browse her own dress? Does she prefer a loose dress?

Tough age for sure and as women we are our own worst critics aren’t we? I had more success finding dresses online, trying them on at home than in the stores. It always helps me having my hair done and makeup before trying on clothes too. One of my bridesmaids wore a beautiful jumper/romper from David’s Bridal. Here are a few other ideas your daughter may like (I would totally love these!!) a lot of girls like the Bohemian look that may peak her interest 🌸Teenage daughter with body anxiety - Help!! 1

I agree with letting her pick out a cute pantsuit or something along those lines that she will feel comfortable with. She doesn’t need to be in a dress. Having her feel confident and comfortable will go a long way throughout the day, and help you all have the best day you can.

How about black tights and a long sleeved boho-type short dress? That way she still kind of gets the leggings feel and can wear something comfortable but cute! I wear outfits like this to dress up, I’m a big leggings girl. As others have suggested also, maybe let her go shopping on her own and see what she likes?

Thank you all so much!!! We have decided to attempt the jumper/bodysuit route. She is open to this but I don't know that she is completely sold. She is liking it better than the dress. We shall see when it arrives and tries it on. Fingers crossed!! I appreciate the advice, ideas, support and kindness! Teenage daughter with body anxiety - Help!! 3

Dress & Charm is selling this beautiful convertible jumpsuit your daughter could wear, what's nice about it is that she can style the top however she wants, that way she'll feel comfortable no matter what.

Wow this was so me at 15. Literally panicked going into stores. And I was so much smaller then than I am now, but in my head I was so ugly and chubby. My mom used to take me to the salon to get my hair and makeup done and I felt so beautiful and the hairdressers and makeup artists were so nice. And yes, I liked picking out things and trying them on at home, in private, looking in my own mirror and at my own pace. Once I found a dress I loved, I felt as comfortable as I was in jeans and a t-shirt. And my mom would tell me I looked great after I picked out a dress I liked so I really believed it, I didn't think she was just saying that as my mom. It was the best feeling.
