Tasteful garter toss...??

Ashley589, on July 12, 2016 at 2:55 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 40

Alright so I'll admit it..I used to be so anti-bouquet and garter toss.

I wanted to do an anniversary dance to honor my grandparents, but now my grandparents sadly cannot come due to my Papa's health, so I am definitely not doing that anymore because it will just break my heart even more to not have them there.

I have a lot of single girlfriends who were disappointed I wasn't doing a bouquet toss, so I thought, okay fine I'll do it.

Now I'm thinking, ew, that means I have to do a garter toss?

I am so against the whole having him take it off of me in front of everyone..even if I do wear it really low and it takes 2 seconds.

Has anyone seen a garter toss done in a tasteful way? Can I already have it off?

I've never seen it done tastefully but am toying with the idea of even doing it myself, so I'm following!

Firstly you don't have to do a garter too if you do a bouquet toss. Also I don't know of a non creepy way for your husband to go under your dress. So maybe a dummy garter? Like you don't wear it at all. And someone just hands it to your DH at the right time.

FH'S cousin had the men line up and the one wearing the shortest socks got the garter. It was not taken off of the bride. It was one she never had on. I didn't like the sock thing but you could definitely turn it into a contest of some sort. I'm simply eliminating the garter toss.

You don't have to do both if you don't want to. I think it's fine if u just do the bouquet toss and not the garter toss.

I also cringed at the thought of my FH diving up my dress in front of my parents, nana, and other guests. I can't imagine this being done in a tasteful way but I'm following to see any suggestions.

I think my cousin had a bouquet toss but not the garter. No rule says it's both or nothing.

You definitely don't have to do both. In fact, please don't. Garter toss is so icky.

I didn't realize the guy who catches it puts it on the girl who catches the bouquet...eww.

I say just have one handy and give him to throw - no one needs to see him take it off of you.

You can always use the garter as a wrap around the toss bouquet so it's just taken off there rather than taken off of you.

Ah! I jumped on board here because have had the same back-and-forth about the garter thing!! I like the idea of using one that HAS NOT been on my body (because sweat! ew!) and just make it more of a fun contest. I'd thought about having one wrapped around a football (FH and crew are all into football) to toss.

Most weddings I've been to have had a bouquet/garter toss, but I've never heard of the guy that catches it putting it on someone's leg. Eww!!

My FH has always been grossed out by garter tosses so we thought about not having one until he heard of an idea from another wedding of just putting a garter on a football and throwing that. Turned out to be a perfect compromise since we have several little girls coming that love bouquet tosses, and FH & his friends are all about anything relating to competition & sports.

I've heard of alternate "garter toss" ideas where the groom throws a little black book instead of the garter - with fake info inside bc that would otherwise be weird, or just say "see the best man" or "see FH's brother" or something.

    Or boutonniere toss ?

If you're against it then I don't think you should do it.

I suppose you could toss it if it was already off as well, if you want to.

But if you don't like the idea of a garter toss, then I'd just toss the bouquet.

At Christmas, my (extended) family plays a game where you get gag gifts. A million years ago someone brought a huge pair of women's undies. Now it's a running joke and they keep making an appearance every few years. At my sister's wedding, instead of a garter, her DH pulled those out from under her dress! Not exactly "tasteful", but it was hilarious! Smiley smile

I don't have an issue with the garter toss personally. It's more of a humorous thing than a pervy thing if you ask me.

It's your wedding though, and you can toss a bouquet without flinging a garter.

The football idea is a good alternative imo...it can just be on the football, don't need to take it off of you

@KMR I recently went to a wedding where people were trying to force the guy who caught the garter to put it on the leg of the girl who caught the bouquet...it was SO uncomfortable
