Taco Bars and People Who Don't Like Tacos

Mandi, on April 29, 2019 at 4:35 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 27
So the fiance and I are set on a taco bar. Like 100,000,000% WE ARE HAVING A TACO BAR.
We like tacos, they are delicious, and check the gluten free dietary box for the future husband.

Apparently there are people in this world that don't like tacos. My first instinct is to not invite these kinds of taco hating rif-raf to my wedding. Unfortunately that means my dad, grandma, and FBIL/groomsman won't be invited. And well... I guess they should be invited.

So my thought is having BBQ pulled pork.

Here's my thought process. Allow me to walk you thru it.

Asking for a preference on the RSVP is out.
*We aren't having a plated meal.
Partially due to cost.
Partially because that's an oddity where I'm from.
And also, how bougie would a plated served taco be. 😆
I'm also afraid that since we're doing a buffet, we might run out of the selected item someone chose because people change their mind.

Would it be odd to just have a minimal amount of pulled pork plated and served to my dad and FBIL?
(My grandma hates everything, she'll just have to eat cake. - She probably hates cake too. 🤷‍♀️)

As a picky eater, I'm used to going to a wedding and not finding anything to eat.

So my sympathies are small.

Eat free food, drink free drinks, be happy, or sneak out for some fast food.

I think feeding dad and FBIL are important, otherwise I wouldn't be making any sort of accomodation.

Is there any other sort of fix for this situation that I'm overlooking?

Obvious, but we WILL NOT give up our taco bar.

Thanks!

I have little tolerance for picky eaters (sorry) but if you’re invite to a free meal and you can’t find anything to eat because you don’t like anything (as oppose to a legitimate dietary restriction), to me that’s their problem. Will your taco bar be self-assembly? Could they eat the filling without making tacos?

If they absolutely insisting on having something else I would make sure the second entree has enough to feed everyone. There’s really no way to enforce what people eat at a buffer.

Hmm. I dunno if it's fair to have pulled pork just for them, because that's delicious too lol. I'd either do both and let people choose (if you can afford it) and if one runs out first, oh well, especially because buffets are usually released by tables and I'm assuming dad and fbil will be in one of the earlier tables to go. Or I'd let them know their is gonna be tacos and that's the option and if they don't want it they need to plan ahead. (Kinda mean, but if it's not dietary restrictions then I dont feel terrible about it)

Will you have multiple meat options on the taco bar? Why can’t they just eat all the taco ingredients without making a taco?

I think if you add pulled pork, it needs to be enough for everyone. I would totally eat a pulled pork taco.

    We're doing tacos too!!

Honestly were not giving another option.. we figured if their going to be picky they can make just a salad or eat off of our chips and cheese fountain all night lol. We will also have beans and rice so i thoughts its just not worth the extra headache because two or three people wont like tacos.

If it’s just two guests who you have to worry about (dad & FBIL) I don’t see having two plated different meals for them as a big deal 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tacos are great! My concern with only tacos would mainly be with vegetarians, because they would likely not get a filling meal. This can be solved by adding some plant protein (like mushrooms etc) as one of the filling options. That’s of course relevant only if some of your guests are vegetarians. In our case, we have at least third of the guests who don’t eat meat, so it would be an issue lol.

From what I had talked about with my caterer is that there is no way to put food out self-served buffet style and not have only those guests it is for eat it. If it is out, it needs to be enough for everyone. You can tell your caterer or server that certain people have certain dietary restrictions (to put it nicely) and this food is for them only and have them request it.

If I was a guest who didn’t enjoy tacos but did like pulled pork, I would NOT be pleased to notice your few favorite people got special food and I got to go hungry. If you want to add pulled pork make sure there’s enough for anyone who wants it. I’d always recommend even if you wanted to do only tacos, have more than one option for protein (be it chicken or pork or fish in addition to beef), and that way everyone should be able to put together a meal to at least satisfy their hunger.

We are doing a nacho bar, my sister doesn't really like Mexican food. She can eat what we are having or she can bring her own food. I don't have the time, patience, or money to deal with personal preferences outside of actual dietary restrictions.

What about if you had some varieties of shredded meets that are unflavored/not specific to tacos?

Dont get me wrong im a taco lover... but what if the portion of your taco bar for meat included: shredded chicken, shredded beef, and shredded pork. You could also include a bowl of lettuce that could be used as a salad base, or as toppings for tacos. When you get to the portion for sauce, you can have: bbq, taco sauce, etc.

that way it it kind of flows together and it’s not a specific plated meal for specific people.

If pulled pork is an option for two guests, it should be an option for anyone else who wants it.

Happy to help! I think the majority of people would be perfectly fine with what we are planning on serving. Choosing food and wedding planning in general is hard enough without people being difficult.

I'm only worried because my dad is diabetic and kinda a terrible person if he's hungry and doesnt get to eat.

Honestly, if anyone shows up to the wedding thinking they are more important than the bridal party and our parents, they have an ego that isn't welcome at my wedding.

    Keep your taco bar!!!

It's not right for you to change up your whole plan for a couple of picky eaters. Here are some solutions I thought of:

dad and fbil can fill up before the wedding, or eat after. You can't offer them pulled pork, and not offer it to everyone else. That's rude. So, if you can afford to have pulled pork for everyone, in addition to your taco bar, that's great. Otherwise, dad and fbil are just going to have to deal with it.

Don't let anyone manipulate you that way!!!! Don't let them guilt you into ditching the one thing you really want for your wedding reception.

I totally get where you're coming from. I have gone to plenty of weddings and smiled politely while I ate my rubber steak and cold potatoes. I survived. I agree that adding a few choices of protein will likely fix this. You can have pork, beef and shrimp for tacos and people can eat it how they like.

First of all, you are hilarious and I think we need to be friends. TOTALLY AGREE. To 'please' everyone, what if you do a couple different meats instead of 100% taco meat? You could also do like a baked potato bar (suuuuper cheap), for the crazy people who don't like tacos.

We're doing a taco and baked potato bar. So, if you don't like tacos, you can have a baked potato. We'll have taco meat and all the taco toppings including lettuce, tomato, onion (they could make a salad).. but we'll also have like ham cubes and such to put on the potato if you wish. There will also be nachos (chips/cheese) so you can add whatever you'd like to the top. There's lots of options for not a lot of moolah.

    Tacos!!! 🌮 I love them!!

What about a taco/salad bar? Tacos or salads can use some of the same fixings but might help those who don’t want tacos. I would do enough pulled pork for everyone. Dads can eat it plain, guests might want in salad or tacos. Seriously all this sounds amazing.

To me taco bars are the perfect thing. I’d definitely have rice and beans (for vegetarians and for making rice bowls instead of tacos), maybe tone down the seasoning on one of the meats? But yeah, as someone with an actual medical condition that can’t eat at most events my sympathy for people who just don’t like tacos is limited.
