Tables: Long or Round?

Z_Runner, on February 14, 2017 at 6:43 AM Posted in Planning 0 26

We are a bit conflicted about what kind of tables we want at our wedding. His mom got really upset when we said we wanted long tables- I already lost 2 arguments regarding the way I want my wedding to go. So, we are wondering what are the benefits one over the other? Our wedding should be around 50 guest, I will need to separate some people- hence, Long tables = assigned seats. Her claim is that it will be difficult to engage in a conversation on the long/tuscan tables.

Just an overview of what I want for the wedding: short simple ceremony (we've been together for 10 years), hang around w friend and family at the cocktail hour and a sit down dinner. We are not having a real reception...so any advice??? And sorry for the rant...both of our families are being a pain...

Sorry, but your FMIL is right on this one. Long tables make it really hard to talk to each other. You can still assign seats with round tables to separate those you feel need to be!

I'm having long tables but it's two next to each other to make it wider. I don't see a problem with it. But if your only reasoning is to separate people, you can still assign seats at round tables.

We're having long tables (30-40 people on one or two tables depending on RSVPs). I recently went to a wedding with long tables and feel there was just as much, if not more, conversation on the long tables as there was with any round table wedding I've been too/

I think long tables look better

However, our venue comes with enough round tables and not enough long and I didn't want to waste money on tables when there's some already included...I'm doing long for head table (duh) and round for the others

Wish I could've done long everywhere though.

I love the look of long tables, but think round tables are better for conversation!

We are doing a mix of long tables that seat 12 with round tables that seat 8.

Round tables all the way. I find they look much nicer and you can still do a seating chart with round.

I love round tables. Why can't you assign tables if they are round?

Team round tables! I'm using them for my reception over the long tables. I've been to weddings with both and felt that long tables were a bit awkward for conversation, but great for exercise. I was walking around all night to talk to people sitting at other areas of the table.

Thanks! So- my parents are divorce and they can't stand each other...our original idea of the Long tables was for us to me in the middle and separate my mom side and my dads side while we were all sitting together...and then my FMIL throw a fit yesterday because that was a horrible idea and she want round tables. We though about the alternative- us sitting separate and then my mom and dad can have their own table. We wanted to sit with our families...

Personally I hate sitting at long tables. It's almost impossible for me to have a conversation at them, without fail I always end up not talking to anyone and keeping to myself. Long tables have always just been too overwhelming for me. I'm not even having a head table (for other reasons, but this was one of the big ones). I'm team round tables, it's much easier to carry conversation. Though I also see a lot of beautiful photos of wonderfully decorated long tables so I can see the appeal there. You can still assign seating with round tables to an extent, you assign tables. If there are people who you don't think can sit together and enjoy themselves then just put them at a different table.

My decorator told me if you have limited space to use long tables. Also long tables make it awkward for conversations. Round tables are more easier for flow of thngs including conversation it also helps using a seating chart if you need to keep certain people from certain people.

I wish we could do all round tables but their aren't enough with the venue to accommodate everyone so we're having to do long tables for guests and rounds for tables of "honor." I agree conversation flows easier between everyone with round tables.

We have 52 people total, using 7 round tables set for 8 people each. Assigning tables but not chairs. There will be a couple unused place settings but that's fine.

I prefer round tables because I like the way they look better - they have more of that ballroom feel to me. Also, it does help with conversation and making everyone feel included.

Sounds like with such an intimate reception, round tables might be just as awkward. Long tables will be nice, but be extra attentive to your seating chart. Make sure people have someone to engage with, and you keep ex-families away from each other. Good luck!

We are doing long tables. Its easier to arrange do to the layout of our venue and limited space. But my family is also loud and wouldn't think twice about yelling to someone down the table Smiley smile
