Surprise During Ceremony or Cocktail Hour/reception?

Hailey, on February 13, 2023 at 4:33 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 3

I got a special engraving on the inside of my fiance's ring, a special line from the book that brought us together. Look up 'All My Atoms' from His Dark Materials for the passage if you'd like to read it. He's not allowed to see it before the wedding; I love surprises, and this is one of the few I've been able to plan for him. He's very excited about it!

We're not having a religious ceremony, so I'm wondering if it's best to have him see the engraving and read the passage during the ceremony or afterwards? The officiant we're looking at has poems and all sorts of things she's incorporated into ceremonies, I've been assured it would be a smooth addition if I was to go that route.

Also, we're not expecting any toasts or speeches during the reception. My MOH who would have made a toast dropped out for major health reasons, and my fiance's best man has already begged us not to force him to do any public speaking because he gets mad stage fright. We don't mind, it just means we don't have excessive amounts of people waiting to talk and aren't adding additional time to standard toasts and things if I read it during the reception.

If you're wanting to present him with the surprise publicly, I think it could be really cool to incorporate into the ceremony during the exchange of rings! Your wedding rings are there to symbolize your love and commitment to each other and the fact that his ring has something so personal to your relationship engraved is super cool!

Definitely take his perspective into account though and maybe ask if that's something he'd be cool with. If he usually prefers privacy for special/emotional moments, he may enjoy getting the surprise in private and sharing that moment with just you and then reading the engraving to your guests later on.

That's a great idea, thank you! We're doing a first look, he may appreciate it more if I share that with him then.
