Suggestions needed for thin/fine hair...

Nel, on December 12, 2013 at 5:16 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

Ok well it's still a fair bit of time before I'll get a hair and make-up trial, but I'm already thinking about hair styles... and it's getting depressing.

I have thin/fine, shoulder-length brown hair and I don't really know what to do with it. It's not exactly baby-thin... but still thinner than a lot of peoples' hair. It's genetic so it's always been like that, and I've always had trouble with it. I definitely can't do a down-style as it falls flat really quickly, and wind will blow it into a mess. So an up-style it is.

I'm looking on the internet for hair styles and all I see is people with gorgeous luscious thick hair (so jealous!).

Does anyone else have this problem? What are you doing with your hair? Suggestions would be appreciated!

Note - I'm not too keen on extensions or anything like that which could damage my hair (it's hard enough trying to keep it from breaking as it is)

You could stay taking Biotin, do not take pre natal vitamins it is very harmful to you if you are not trying to become pregnant or are pregnant.

My cousin also has thin hair and for any occasion that she wants it to look like she had more she wears a topper, kind of like a partial wig. However this can be expensive.

Also to keep in mind is the person doing your hair knows what they are doing. I had an inverted Bob and have been growing it out. But the ladies that did my hair trial back in Aug made it look like I had more hair then was actually there.

I have low density hair too. My hair is both fine & thin. I like to wear wigs but not on my wedding day. I haven't yet figure chosen a hairstyle but I'm leaning towards a loose curly updo. I'm going to see a hairstylist for a trial. I'm going to ask her to give me a wash & set. French twist it up in the back & have the loose curls on the top & sides. That style makes my hair looks fuller & thicker.

You have the same type of hair that I do OP. I plan on doing an updo with minimum curl as it won't stay otherwise. I will probably do some type of bun with a filler/base underneath to give it more volume.

Have you ever thought of clip in extensions? they are fitted to your head and just clip in, not ruining your hair. I have thin & fine hair and it's great.

I am also using biotin shampoo. And Dry Shampoo is great too, to add volume to your hair! Just tease it after you put it in.

I will be doing an updo for my wedding!

I used a filler thing - your hair stylist will know how to work with thin hair.

also, prenatal vitamins aren't harmful .... they're vitamins.

I think I may have used the wrong word in my post. I just looked up 'thin vs fine' and I was meaning 'fine'. Although looking at it, I think my hair is low density as well.

I'll look into the biotin thing, although I doubt there's much that I can do before the wedding regarding hair thickness (my hair grows quite slowly) but if it can help a bit then I'll try it!

@Robin - that's a really nice up-do. I might consider something like that as my hair keeps curls really well (the only advantage of having fine hair!). I do wonder if it'll be long enough though.

Anyway thanks for all the suggestions!

I have exactly the same issue! My hair is pin straight and very thin; mine is also just past my shoulders and dark brown. I used clip-in extensions and they worked out beautifully...I didn't want to damage my hair either, so I didn't want to use sew in or glue in extensions, but the clip-in's worked very well, gave me the volume and length I wanted, and they work just like a barrette, so it won't rip your hair out or anything!

Here's a few pictures so you can see how my hair actually is (in the first picture where it's down), and then what I was able to do with my hair with clip-ins! Smiley winking

Just because they are vitamins does not mean that they are good for you. Lower amount of calcium then what you require, too much folic acid can mask a B 12 deficiency so you can become more prone to bruising, too much iron so it is not used builds up in your body causes constipation and in some cases can lead to death.

Just because it is a vitamin you need to educate your self on what you are taking and what your body actually needs. Multi vitamins are the worst, you should only supplement what you don't get from your normal diet.

And yes those are the things listed in prenatal vitamins that we as non pregnant require a different amount.

Yea that is a discussion about vitamins in general, not specifically prenatal

My sister has baby fine, thin, stick straight hair and I LOVED her hairstyle for my wedding. It looks like she has tons more hair than she really does (pic attached - low side pony and curled).

Mine isn't fine, thin, or straight by any means (polar opposite of my sister), but I still went for extensions. I will miss them when I get them taken out next week. I love the added volume.

@Mrs. Katie J and Paris - those are some lovely hairstyles :-) (and gorgeous wedding pics Mrs Katie!) I'm starting to feel better lol.

Mrs Katie - I never would have guessed that you had clip-in extensions. Is that something that the hairdresser had/suggested or did you have to buy them yourself?

I have pretty thin hair but when I was a BM in my friend's wedding last summer she was able to do an updo that looked full and make it look like I had much more hair. They know what they are doing Smiley smile

Also @Kelly...although we are not planning on trying to have a baby for at least another year and a half, my obgyn told me I can start taking prenatal vitamins now if I wanted, sooo I'm pretty sure they are not harmful. The situations you are talking about are for few and far between and definitely an extreme.

@Jessica. IMO some doctors know very little science. Sorry my knowledge is coming from my degree and area of scientific reach and reading 100+ peer reviewed articles in the top research journals. I have seen doctors that I left the room when they said "oh I found chemistry and biochemistry so hard". I am like wait a minute your going to prescribe something to me that you have not got a clue on how it works?

Sorry to the original poster for this.

Sorry it is upsetting to see so many people harming their bodies because they do not fully understand what each of the chemicals does once they enter the blood stream. And the potential impact of having too much of something.

Since they are just vitamins would you pick up a bottle targeted for 50+ or what about your FH's?

I have super, super fine hair, and I have had a perm for years. I don't know if that's an option for you, but it's worked for me....

I'll give you some of my hair, it's too thick D: imagine it taking 2 hrs for you hair to dry naturally D: then 3 hrs to straighten it. I'd call a stylist go in for a trial Smiley laugh
