Succulent Centerpieces?

BootsyBoo, on September 14, 2016 at 7:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I'm kind of thinking this setup for the centerpieces at the tables. I want to combine the table number into the centerpiece. Should I have a florist do this or can I DIY to save some money?

Well obviously you'd have to DIY since you don't have money for a florist.

A two for one deal with forum posts today, I see...

And considering you're asking if you should have a florist do it or DIY to save money, well, I think you answered your own question as to which answer you were leaning towards/expecting to receive.

You can definitely DIY! We are using succulents as part of our theme and decide to grow our own. It's really easy and saves a lot of money. These are really pretty!

I hadn't considered growing our own. Are they hard to grow?

I think the centerpieces are simple and so gorgeous.

Saving money is great, but it also depends on your comfort zone. Do YOU feel that you have the time and capability to take on the project?

I would like to think I can. I've just never made anything like this before, so idk.

I collect succulents. They are easy, but have different needs. Some need 12 hours of sunlight where others only need 8. Some can go a long time without water, some need water weekly. It really depends on the species.

ETA: These are the succulents we bought for favors: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007P6W8AW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thank you! With our budget we are probably going to be skipping favors to be honest. But maybe we can still order through Amazon for the centerpieces.

Succulents are harder than you think and can be just as costly as flowers... you'd be better off with fakes.

Reality Check: Maybe harsh, but have you done a budget breakdown to see how much you should be spending on centerpieces? I know you are on a very tight budget; honestly centerpieces should be a low priority on a 2k budget. You would probably do best to try your luck on your local craigslist and facebook resale groups and not be too picky and get what you can for $100 max. and thats it.

Jordyn- Super easy! Read this article. We just pulled the leaves off of succulents right at the base and set them on top of soil and they started growing new succulents. http://needlesandleaves.net/blog/2013/5/31/propagating-leggy-succulents

Erin Wood, as someone who has a large collection of succulents, I can say that it is NOT super easy, especially if she has no experience.

I bought a bunch of succulents from Mountain Crest Gardens (a mail order website) in the months leading up to the wedding. I had fun using them for favors, but it was not the least expensive way to go. I think you could find cheaper options for centerpieces. The succulent in your first picture is large, that would take over a year to grow that big. A plant that size would be over $10 around here, plus the price of the surrounding candle holders. I think my floral centerpieces were cheaper than that would be.

If you are not a gardener, growing anything for your wedding is not the time to become one.

If you are not an avid DIY'er, your wedding is not the time to start.

Centerpieces are not a necessity. You can totally skip them and no one will notice. Succulents are low maintenance once they are established, but they are no means easy.

My mom found some smaller ones that look super real (had to touch them to tell) at Michaels. Look into places like that or online and you might find a deal!

Jordyn, you can't afford succulents like that. Keep looking.

Okay, I HATE hate HATE the idea of ever growing ANYTHING for the wedding. It's too unpredictable. Don't make a bad decision with something pretty important.
