Student strings players - How much to pay them?!?

elle, on March 14, 2012 at 11:53 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

I work as a teacher at a very prestigious art school. My students are outstanding; they want to be here and they take their education very seriously. I want to ask several of the strings students to play at my wedding ceremony. Many of them would do it for free because they are just that kind, but I do want to compensate them. Please let me know how much you feel would be appropriate. I want to have a quartet (4 people). I want to pay them, but I do not want to be paying what I would pay a professional. Any suggestions would be awesome! Also, if you are having a string quartet, and if you wouldn't mind, I would love to know how much you are spending.

I would say $50 for each student. It will at least cover their gas and maybe a little something extra.

I think that is a good price. I am hoping that some other ladies/gents will share how much they are spending on music for the ceremony. Anyone?!

My sister was in a high school quartet that did weddings and they charged $500. They were fantastic and no one had problems paying that price. The $500 went to fund the orchestra's yearly trips abroad (Asia, Italy, etc) as they performed internationally.

I should ask the strings teacher if they offer anything like that because it is only 100 more than $5o per person, and I might get the strings teacher to help me out! Great idea Janelle!

Bands, especially string quartets are not cheap. However, they would probably do it for free. I think a $50 Visa gift card per kid would be greatly appreciated- and of course, an invitation to the wedding.

@meghan B- they would be invited to the wedding because they are playing at the wedding, but I would not allow them to come to the reception because they will not be playing at the reception. Is that what you meant?

I think you should pay them what musicians would make at a regular gig. Call a bar near by and ask what they pay for the night. (around here it's about $300, regardless of wether thats2 guys or 5 and they all split it) Wedding musicians charge ALOT more at least for the reception. I have friends that charge $250 a night to a bar and $1200 a night for a wedding. (but thats the reception cause bands always have to change for their audience at a wedding and set up waay earlier than if it was a bar)

@ goodkarma I am talking about 13 year old kids. Around here for a string quartet its 700- 1200 for 1 hour. If I wanted to pay professional prices, I would have professionals do it. I only want them to play, at most, 4 songs over the span of an hour.

We have a string trio of college students and they're charging $400, so I guess $50 is ok if they're high school kids.
