Still Mr. and Mrs. if I don't change my last name?

Chrissy, on February 16, 2014 at 9:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

I'm still deciding if I want to change my last name, but am leaning toward not changing. I don't have a good reason other than it's my name and I don't want to change it. The one thing that's bothering me is will we still be Mr and Mrs? FH says yes, because we're married, but doesn't Mr and Mrs refer to the same last name? I don't think we have to have the same last name to be a family, but this is bothering me for some reason. I appreciate the opinions!

Traditionally, a woman who kept her last name was "Miss," even though married. These days, every woman I know who has kept her last name goes by "Ms." Since Ms. was specifically designed to be appropriate for any woman, regardless of marital status, it works perfectly for this purpose.

Technically yes you are, but when you get mail and stuff I believe etiquette makes it so it's

    Mr. Joseph Palmer

    Ms. Jessica Lauren

    125 smith street

    Princeton, NJ

Actually, once you are married, it becomes:

Mr. Joseph Palmer and Ms. Jessica Lauren

    125 Smith Street

    Princeton, NJ

Putting them both on one line and using "and" between them indicates that you are married.

If you don't change your last name, most people will call you Ms. If you go by Mrs Yourlast, they'll assume your husband's last name is Yourlast. It's not a law or anything, just what most people will assume.

Mrs indicates a married woman, regardless of whether she changes her last name or not.

But, it is considered more politically correct to use "ms" regardless of marital status, so practically it won't really make a difference Smiley sad

Some women keep their maiden name for business/professional reasons and socially are known by their married last name.

Mrs. YourCurrentLastName would be your mother, not you.

I will most likely do what you described, Nancy. I have no problem being Mrs. HisLastName socially, I just don't want it legally. I guess my concern isn't being Mrs. CurrentLastName, but if we as a pair are a Mr. And Mrs. I know it sounds silly, but I like the idea of us being a Mr. And Mrs., even if we have different last names. For example, could we have toasting flutes with Mr. and Mrs.on them? Could I have a Mrs. Kate Spade necklace? I know it 's really silly and minor, but it's what I'm concerned with. Smiley smile

No.. At least I don't want to be Mrs. I will go by Ms.. Which is something I already do anyway.

I don't want any Mrs items, because I'm not a Mrs.

I am in this dilemma. I have professional work that is published and I don't want to lose my connection to my work. However, I always planned on being a Mrs. So, how does being Mrs. Him work socially and Ms. Me work at work? I'm not sure that I get the practical applications of being both Ms. Me and Mrs. Him - although aren't we all still both in many ways. Smiley smile
