Steaming your own dress?

BeachBride2016, on August 19, 2016 at 10:36 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

My seamstress suggested I steam my own dress, rather than paying for her to steam it. She said between me transporting it from her store to the venue (about an hour away), it is bound to get wrinkles and that it's easy enough to do on my own and will save some money. My dress isn't the kind to get too wrinkly - it isn't poufy and has a thin tulle with lace applique over the top. Even at my fitting last weekend, after it had been in a bag for 6 1/2 months, it didn't look wrinkled.

Is anyone else planning on steaming their own dress? If so, do you think a good handheld (full-sized) one would work?

I have no plans on doing it myself. I wouldnt want to ruin my dress. You can probably just put it in a bathroom with hot water and let it steam out but even with that I would be nervous.

I steamed a friends wedding dress for her, worked fine. Took forever since my steamer was a little travel steamer but nonetheless it worked.

There's no reason you couldn't do it yourself as far as I know. My family has multiple steamers, both professional and the kind you can buy at big box stores. Neither the steam or the steamer itself will hurt your dress. It is possible for steamers to spit water sometimes, but if you let it heat up properly before I don't think it would be an issue.

I purchased a travel size steamer from Amazon. It had great reviews and others (per the reviews) had used it for wedding gowns. Sounds like this may work for you. I am getting mine steamed and taking my travel size steamer to the hotel with me.

Bring a travel steamer with you. Turn your dress inside out to steam it. I do NOT advise doing this with silk dresses because water leaves spots and should be done professionally. Do not steam your veil unless you want it to melt! Hang your veil on a hanger over the shower or a door hanger overnight and it should be fine.

If unsure if you can do this yourself, pay the money and have it steamed professionally as it's worth it. You don't want a wrinkled wedding dress to show up in your wedding pictures!

My venue has a steamer in the bride's room that we can use to get out any extra wrinkles. If I didn't have this, I would probably bring a travel steamer with me.

A tulle dress? Nope, I wouldn't. Too much of a chance of melting the tulle! Nope, nope, nope!

I am streaming my own dress. At the bridal salons I worked at we always used irons and hand steamers and always had nylons over the top of them. For dresses we always turned them inside out first since they always have a liner that causes most of the wrinkles.

I've been wondering this too. What about satin, does anyone know? I know it won't melt but I wondered about water spots.

I wouldn't do it myself. You should also take it out of the dress bag the morning of your wedding and hang it up to let any wrinkles fall out.

We bought a $20 hand-held steamer from BBB for our wedding day though, so the girls could use it on their BM dresses and it worked like a charm! Its DH's favorite gadget too because he hates ironing.
