Stag n' Drag

Amber, on April 9, 2017 at 9:11 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

So ladies, I have another question for ya. What is a Stag n' Drag? I have never heard of it, but the MIL wants to throw one for the FH and I. I'm guessing it's more of a northern thing, as I have never heard of it. Has anyone ever been to one? If so, is it like a bridal shower for both the bride/groom-to-be?

That sounds like it's one of those sell raffle tickets to fund the wedding types of events.

ETA: don't do it if that's what it is

A stag and doe party, stag and drag party, hen and stag party, buck and doe party, or a jack and jill party is a party and fundraiser for an engaged couple.

Also from the Northeast and have never heard of such a thing.

If it is a stag and doe party, hard no here. Tacky and rude. Tell fmil you'll pay for the wedding yourself. Don't fundraise for your wedding.

The only time I've heard the term Stag n Drag was when I was in college in Erie PA. I live in OH and have never heard of it here.

Thanks ladies. I will have to check with the MIL about the details of said Stag N Drag and make sure it is not a fundrasier. When she originally brought up the idea, she explained she wanted to throw a party for the families that would not be able to make it to wedding due to distance/ other obligations. Also for those asking, the FH is from Erie, PA

Prewedding parties are only for guests who are invited to the wedding. I would decline any party like what your FMIL is suggesting. You don't want to sound money-grabby!

Weird! I've heard of these but never in the context of being a fundraiser. That's insane! I was under the impression they were just a couples' shower, for both the bride and groom (not just the bride).

I am originally from Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Erie, PA 16 years ago. I had never heard of a Stag 'n Drag (usually just referred to as a "Stag") until I moved to Erie. It is very popular here, and people look forward to going to them. They are indeed a fundraiser, however, it is tradition. As soon as I announced my engagement, friends were offering to help me with MY stag! While researching the topic, I've found that a lot of people not familiar with them think they are tacky. I honestly think that most people in Erie would be offended if someone said that to them! Stags aren't just for family and friends, anyone can and will go to stags. It's very common to hear people saying that they are going to a stag on a weekend, even if they don't know the couple. It's a fun time, and mostly everybody has a good story about the good times they've had at a stag.

I’m from Erie PA and almost everyone I have every known to get married has had one and I’ve been to several. They are super fun! I live in Florida and I just recently got engaged and I am totally gonna have one. There is food and beer and you raffle off liquor and 50/50 tickets, sell Jell-O shots and play games. You charge like $10 or $15 dollars to anyone who wants to come not just the wedding party and invited guests. They have fun and win stuff. I totally recommend it. I am not a rich person and want to have a nice wedding, nothing elaborate, but it is a great way to help fund your wedding or honeymoon. https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Stag%20N%27%20Drag

Yep...must be an Erie, PA thing... that’s where I live and have known about them for 10+ years. I’ve been to a few where we didn’t know the couple getting married. Still a good time though! Met new people and helped the couple celebrate their upcoming day.
