Splitting the day because of covid

Hello

My fiance and I are looking at getting married on January 23, 2021. We picked the day thinking we would be able to plan more realistically with COVID precautions.

We originally cut down an initial list of 265 guests to 83, thinking coronvirus restrictions might be down and we could have a somewhat "normal" wedding. However we forgot to factor in photographers and vendors and after hearing some news stories we are now debating to cutting it further to 35. This would keep us under the 50 person gathering limit currently in effect in AZ. However this means we can't invite any out of town family (even those who would be willing to risk it). The more we cut down, the more it changes the entire day.

My fiance has suggested splitting our day in two. A marriage day, to perform the ceremony, and a wedding day, to have a reception. The idea being we wait til later to do the reception. I am not the biggest fan of the idea so I was curious if anyone has done that or is planning on doing that in the future. I think my fear is the wedding reception day wouldn't be as special. I would love thoughts and ideas.

My ceremony was 9/1/2020 and we had a guest count of 10 including my husband and I. My reception will be the 19th with a larger guest count. I originally did plan it this way but my guest count shrunk dramatically and I’m kind of glad it did. I think it’s more personal that way.

My fiance and I are doing a minimony in 4 weeks with about 30 people (our closest family and friends.) We will be having a bigger "wedding" in March where we will do another ceremony (with my original dress) and a bigger guest count of over 100 if allowed! Many brides seem to be taking this route because of Covid. I don't see a problem with it but I am also biased lol

I read the gathering limit in AZ is based on if your venue has appropriate social distancing measures and certain safety measures. My bff is getting married in two weeks in Tucson AZ and her rsvp count is at 90.

We are doing it at a local church my fiancé works at. So it’s a private venue, one we have full control over everything. Do you know where your friend got the information about that? I’ve been looking through all of the executive orders to see if I can find any details.

I think what you are suggesting is pretty common among COVID couples. We are doing a minimony in October and then the big wedding next year. For our minimony, we are getting married in a church and then having dinner at a restaurant. For the big wedding, we plan on still doing a ceremony of sorts, might be the same ceremony, might be a vow renewal, haven't decided yet, but then have the big reception right after. Most of our friends and family who know what we are doing say this is fine, though some older relatives might not understand why we would get married sooner, but in my family the elderly relatives think COVID is not a big deal...

This also depends on where you are with your FH. We've been together almost 7 years, we knew it was time, this was always the plan to get married this year, so we are doing it, and if we have to postpone next year's big wedding again, at least we will have already gotten married anyway.

I plan on doing this. Eloping or having only our parents as guests and then having a reception at my FH's parents house 3 to 6 months later. I'm not worried about not feeling special because I hate being the center of attention.
