IDK how you say that, but at weddings I've been to, after the bride throws her bouquet and the groom throws the garter, the woman that caught the bouquet sits down, and the man that caught the garter places the garter on the woman that caught the bouquet.

We ARE doing both a bouquet toss and a garter removal. I'm not too worried about the garter removal, I think it will probably be a little embarrassing, but after discussing that with FH he came up with a cool little way to make it so he doesn't even have to go up my dress at all (some Doctor Who incorporation, meh, we're a little geeky).

So my question is-how do you guys feel about two random people putting a garter back on? I don't think I want to do that part...we have a lot of friends who are in long term relationships but are not married, and I don't want anyone having to experience the discomfort of watching their significant other putting a garter on, or having a garter put on, by a stranger. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I've heard of it and I've seen it... and it's usually a drunk guy that catches the garter (because they don't care who they run over to catch it) and gets inappropriate (because they are drunk) with the girl that caught the bouquet! I'm not doing a garter or bouquet toss!

I'm in MD and I've seen it at every wedding I've been to. I also find it a bit akward to watch two strangers. I certainly would not want a stranger touching my leg and sliding anything on it.

One wedding I went to did the garter toss, and everyone was really worried it was going to be awkward when it came time to put it on the girl - but when it got to the part where they said to put it on the DJ spun it a different way. He had the guy trade the garter for the bouquet and sit in a chair - then the girl put it on the guy (over his pants leg). It was a little strange, but everyone got a good laugh and it was a little less creepy - no going up clothing.

We are doing the garter toss because FH really wants to and it's tradition in his family - but there will not be putting it on anyone afterwards, they will just dance.

Same as Ashleigh said...the DJ always wants everyone who is not married to come up. But now that I am in a relationship/engaged I resist the pressure and refuse to participate. I'm not taking that chance.

I have been worried about this same situation because I had to witness my FH do this at a friends wedding before we were engaged and it definitely upset me. Luckily he was very much a gentleman about it but a friend of mine gave me a great idea that we're going to use. We are going to blindfold the guy who catches the garter and without him knowing have my FH sit down in front of him. We think it'll get a good laugh out of everyone Smiley smile

I have seen it where one is a kid and the other is an adult on several occasions. VERY creepy. We have not got to this, I personally don't want it put back on someone else. If it was up to me we would scratch the whole garter thing, but he wants do it. UGH>

We are doing it. It's the normal whenever we go to weddings. I can see how its awkward for someone who never heard or saw this. Some think its nasty I don't think so. The weddings I been to we all laugh and had a good time when it happen for the person getting the garter back on.

It's normal in my area but we are not doing the toss at all because we realized there are only about 8 single people at our wedding. I've never seen it too awkward though. Usually there's the group of people who are actually trying to catch the garter or bouquet and those who are not. If someone is that die hard about catching one of those items, it's usually less awkward when they go to put it back on.

Not sure if you'll like this idea, because it would be a bit of a stretch if you're planning a traditional garter removal, but we did an anniversary dance, resulting in only one couple left on the dance floor (which we knew would be my grandparents, who have been married for 51 years).

As soon as they were the only couple left, I gave my grandfather a garter to place on my grandmother, and it seriously made for the most adorable moment!

My grandfather surprised us by putting the garter on with his teeth, and he had us all cracking up the entire time.

I wore a garter as well, which my husband removed in our wedding night hotel room, and I definitely enjoyed the moment much more in private. (:

Here's a couple photos, just for fun. (:

Skip it. Even if you only call out singles, which is what I've always seen done, it's not any easier.

FYI, the tradition - according to another WW poster who looked it up - comes from very long ago, when family accompanied a couple into the bridal bed chamber and collected undergarments and garters (which were functional back then) as proof of the consummation of the marriage. So yeah, skip it Smiley winking

I'm glad you asked this question because I was having the same dilemma. I want to do the removal and toss but not have them put it on. I just came up with an idea after reading an article because sometimes it's even difficult to get guests to participate in this tradition. We are going to offer a gift to the people who catch the garter/bouquet, something small like a Starbucks gift card for example. Most of our guests with also have SO and be more mature so I hope this will be a fun alternative
