SPINOFF Garter Removal: Putting the Garter Back On?

Sally, on September 5, 2014 at 12:55 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 33

IDK how you say that, but at weddings I've been to, after the bride throws her bouquet and the groom throws the garter, the woman that caught the bouquet sits down, and the man that caught the garter places the garter on the woman that caught the bouquet.

We ARE doing both a bouquet toss and a garter removal. I'm not too worried about the garter removal, I think it will probably be a little embarrassing, but after discussing that with FH he came up with a cool little way to make it so he doesn't even have to go up my dress at all (some Doctor Who incorporation, meh, we're a little geeky).

So my question is-how do you guys feel about two random people putting a garter back on? I don't think I want to do that part...we have a lot of friends who are in long term relationships but are not married, and I don't want anyone having to experience the discomfort of watching their significant other putting a garter on, or having a garter put on, by a stranger. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Its funny, because I have NEVER seen that done at a wedding though I have heard of it. I would think it would be awkward for everyone involved....

We are doing the garter toss but I dont think they would put the garter back on the person so we wont do that.

I've always hated that part at weddings, so tacky and awkward for everyone involved. We skipped it entirely.

I haven't actually heard of the guy putting the garter on the woman that caught the bouquet. Awkward! If you wanted to do something with the two together maybe have them start the next dance? It wouldn't be as awkward and the S/O wouldn't be so uncomfortable.

Nope! They just get to keep the things as souvenirs or whatever. Nobody has to dance with anyone else or put the garter back on/etc.

The bouquet toss and garter toss are thrown to SINGLE people. So there is no discomfort about either person being in a relationship.

But if you don't want to do that part just leave it out. I think everyone will be releaved.

I want to say I heard it on here, but fh and I want to do a private garter removal after the ceremony before the reception, nothing X rated, just one that's not in front of my grandma LOL. I still want the garter removal experience but I don't think I'll be able to handle it in front of EVERYONE. So no one will be catching it and this way my face won't be beet red in the pictures! Fh said he's going to wear the garter on his arm for the whole reception hahaha!

Well I thought in case single just meant not married or engaged. Tradition says that the girl to catch the bouquet will be the next to marry. So even if a girl is in a relationship she may still want to marry next

I've heard of it, but I think it's a tradition that should die right away. We're definitely not doing that.

Icky and awkward. I'm in NC and I see it pretty often.

The last wedding I saw it, a little boy (maybe 4 years old) went running for the garter. He put it on the arm of the woman that caught the bouquet. I'm so glad she had enough sense and put her arm out instead of her leg. That would have been all kinds inappropriate.

They just did it at a friends wedding, luckily 2 friends caught the items so it was funny but still semi awkward. one of my gfs caught it when she was 9 and a weird older guy caught the garter and they still wanted them do it. so weird. she ended up crying and they didnt make her.

I was in a wedding when I was 5 and they did that... I caught the bouquet and my cousin (6 at the time) caught the garter..... Creepiest most awkward situation ever....

Ever since then I have been 100% against putting the garter back on.

    JSARGE: that sounds horrible. ew.

Ashleigh, maybe it's a regional thing? I see it all the time as well in FL. Good for that girl, seriously!

And yeah Genny that's my point exactly, people who are in relationships still participate (if they want of course). It may be that in other areas if you're in a relationship at all means you don't participate, but I've always thought only married and engaged people couldn't participate. I'm thinking we just won't do anything afterward: no dance, no garter putting back on. If by some super awesome chance the two that catch both wind up being one of our friends who are in really long term relationships, maybe we'll have them dance together, but if not, no way.

ETA: NotAllWho & Andi... ohhhhh man I didn't even think of family members and tiny children! Oh that would be horrible, we could literally have a brother and sister that catch it or cousins. Why did I not even think of that?

I've never been to a wedding where it happened, and while we're doing the tosses, we're not going to do that part!

I've never seen this done. All the weddings I've been to the guy usually just wears the garter on his arm or sets it down at his table.

DH caught the garter at his bro's wedding before we were engaged and his sister-in-law's daughter caught the bouquet. Super fkn awkward for him to have to put the garter on her leg. I hated every minute of it. Did not do it for our wedding and have never seen it done before or since. Skip it.

ETA: "Single" could be just not married or engaged.

And in my area, they call out all women except married. Doesn't matter if you are engaged or in a relationship, you are called out to catch the bouquet. I don't get engaged woman, they are already getting married...

When I was about 11 or 12, I went to my cousins wedding and they did this. I caught the bouquet and some older guy probably in his 30's caught the garter. Well I was so embarrassed about him putting the dang thing on me and my face was beet red! and to top it off, the guys girlfriend/date totally freaked out on him from being jealous that I caught the bouquet and not her.She actually tried to get me to give her the bouquet so she could get the garter. Total whack job!!! I say, this is a bad idea from actual experience and kinda creepy too...

^Wow Mrs. Sullivan that sounds like a seriously crazy chick. She got jealous of an 11 year old?? Lord. But yeah, I think if that happened to me at that age I probably would have wound up crying in the bathroom, I'm sorry that happened to you!

Mrs. Matthews yeah that's kind of icky too when you think about it.
