Spin-off: Where do you draw the line for gift registry items?

Vanessa, on April 1, 2015 at 3:43 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 21

I recently went to a wedding and purchased something off of their gift registry but they had all kinds of things on there and I was just like ummm.....

For example an Ipad, Ipad mini, Xbox, Wii, TV, electric shaver, $800 camera, new washer, dryer, fridge and a few other things of that nature. Is that common for a gift registry? I've never seen items like that on a registry before nor would I put them on mine but I was just wondering if anyone else thinks its rude to ask your guests for these kinds of things?

I don't think a registry is really "asking" for anything. It gives people a wishlist, but you do need to have different price points. I mean, that's great that they want a new washer and dryer, but that doesn't mean that someone will buy it for them. I say go ahead and register for whatever you want....but people will spend what they can afford. If you don't have anything in the $40-$100 range, you may get a lot of wine glasses you didn't want.

I have seen some crazy items, and every registry is a personal note reflection of we need/want items. But in the end we don't know their whole story. Maybe they listed certain things for their family to purchase.... Idk I'm just being optimistic. Smiley smile

I think the game systems and camera are kind of along the lines of the debate about honeymoon registry in asking people to pay for a lavish get away. The appliances I'm sure nobody will buy, but depending where..like BB&B who give you a % off of left over registry items, could be the only real reason why they put any of that on there.

If I registered somewhere, I might at the last second before my shower put like a PS4 or an appliance (I wouldn't want someone to spend that kind of money on me) so that I could get it 10% off or something if it was offered after the wedding.

I could see a washer/dyer or a fridge. An xbox, wii, ipad, etc? Ehh that's a little strange to me. But whatever floats their boat. If they're lucky someone might buy it.

I wouldn't do it, but to each his own.

A friend of mine registered for a Diet Coke and some gum, just to be funny. I totally bought it for her.

We put a bunch of stuff on our registry that we do not expect anyone to buy us, but we plan on buying them out with our completion discount. The store we registered at offers us an additional 10 to 15% off of the clearance or sales price, and it works up to one year after our wedding date. We added a bunch of items on the registry for that reason. Maybe we will get a bit of side-eye, but I just told anyone who asked why we had a new washer/dryer set on there that we planned on purchasing that ourselves! So I don't really care what anyone puts on their registry, as long as there are plenty of items in EVERY price range.

I think my most 'outrageous' items I have are a vacuum, headboard, and footboard w/ storage... I don't plan on anyone buying the bed furniture, I will purchase them at discount after.

I know my mom would think those items were really odd but personally I don't really bash an eyelash. Those items are not common, I just don't have an issue with them. I'd rather pool in and get a group gift to buy a dryer than I would to contribute to a honeymoon registry.

We have gift cards towards our honeymoon and I felt super awkward about that. I also felt badly about the $199 sheets.

I know a lot of my friends have put a few things on their registry, just to be able to use their completion discount. They don't expect anyone to really buy them.

I know mine is a little all over the place. People from my hometown don't have crazy incomes, but my FH is a personal trainer and the gifts his clients give him for his birthday/Christmas are very generous so we registered for a higher end things I normally wouldn't have.

I don't think its appropriate for a registry to be a Christmas list lol aka no games, game systems, tablets, etc. I don't think its appropriate to ask for things other than what you will use for/around your home.

I don't like it when people put strange things like what you listed. Personally, I just think it's strange. I am buying you a gift to get your home ready for your future together, not for you to play CandyCrush on your iPad and whatever you kids these days play on XBox. I'd rather give you cash and you buy those things on your own. Don't know why, I just feel skiddish with stuff like that. I think it should be things like kitchen necessities, dining items, bathroom items and sheets and blankets.

Oooooh, I didn't know about the percentage off, good to know. I haven't registered anywhere yet because I'm still over a year out until my wedding. Yes, a washer / dryer I can see I just thought the game consoles were odd but they probably put them on there to get a discount after their wedding.

I've put a couch, a pottery barn trunk, and a side chair on my registry. We've also discussed adding the blinds that we're going to order to our list. I have smaller price point items and the option of donating to a charity that we support in our name as well.

My reason for those bigger ticket items are three fold. First a couple of people in our families have mentioned they want to give us bigger ticket items that we need so this gives them some ideas. I'm also hoping that bigger ticket items on the registry and the smaller registry size hints towards the fact that we have several big purchases for our house to make soon (including a new sofa since ours is getting ragged, hardwood floors***, window blinds to replace the ugly ones left in the house when we bought, etc) will maybe encourage people to give cash? I'm not telling anyone out right that I'd prefer cash, but I'm hoping to hint a tiny bit? And finally, the bit mentioned above by Nicole, you can get a % off if it's not purchased on your registry (I hope that doesn't make me terrible... lol).

I think the electronics are interesting, but to each their own.

When we were putting things on our registry (and FH was going a little crazy with his wishlist), we started asking ourselves "if we get this, instead of the dishes we really need, will we be upset?" That halted us from going crazy. We put fun things on there, but I would much rather get the thing we need!

ETA: We did put some board games on our Target registry, just to have something fun!

Not sure, but I got a Go Pro from my registry from a family friend growing up and I'm SO pumped. It was $400 dollars, and I felt bad about it, but decided if by the off chance I got it, I'd be so excited I didn't care (yep).

I think it's a pick your battles- if my whole registry was for iPads, TVs, couches, bed frames, mattresses, etc.. ehhhh. But if someone just has 1-3 "big ticket" items I wouldn't think anything of it

A lot of the registry mailers I've seen from Target suggest adding things like game systems and board games which I don't see a problem with board games at all. Since people get chewed out for honeymoon registries and maybe they don't need home stuff I would rather buy you reasonably priced "alternative" items then be asked straight up for cash. Doesn't bother me. Not gonna lie I've been tempted to scan furniture at Crate and Barrel but I refrained. LOL

Yeah, some of those things are definitely there for the completion discount. I want to put a few things on ours and almost want to provide a disclaimer on our website (eg, "I swear we're not being greedy-- please don't buy us these expensive things because they're only on our registry so we can get a post-wedding discount"), but that would be awkward.

Ive seen board games on a registry before but I think a xbox is a little to much. Some people prob think its crazy but we put some camping and garden stuff on ours.

FH and I are technophiles, so I can see most of our friends being happier with a new Wii than with a stand mixer.

I think it also has to do with age, though. Like, I'm going to be 36 this month. I'm on my third set of dishes. We have more glassware than we can even store in the apartment and have to have a bunch of it in bins on the back porch. We have more decorative items than we have wall and surface space.

Although that's why we simply chose not to register, but if we had, there's no way my FH wouldn't have snuck the new Gameboy on there.
