Spin Off - Deposits and Cashing Checks

******, on May 28, 2015 at 12:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

Since my venue takes care of almost everything, I haven't had to deal with outside vendors and their deposits much. Do vendors typically cash the deposit check right away, or just hold onto it as a retainer and cash it at the time services are rendered (or a contract is broken)?

I signed a contract with my photographer electronically and mailed him a check. He did confirm the check was received almost 2 months ago, but it still hasn't been taken out of my account. I emailed him about this once already since it wasn't cashed after 3 weeks and he was out of the country, but said he did get it. He's been back for a few weeks and it still hasn't been taken out.

MY MUAH person took like 2 months to cash my deposit check. Most of the others deposited it right away, within a week or so.

All mine deposited right away (well, within a few days).

It's weird that he hasn't. Doesn't he know that checks can expire?

Think about when you get a check...do you run right out to the bank that same day or does it sit in your purse for a couple days until you remember to stop or find an ATM? For me, I always end up holding on to them for a couple days before I remember to stop

I only wrote one check for our caterer, every one else I pay with my debit card through paypal. I HATE writing checks, because people forget to cash them and I can't stand for my account to be off balance lol.

I totally leave checks in my wallet all the time, but usually not for months. I just figured since it's from his job, he'd probably want the money. I know when I have paychecks that are live instead of direct deposit, those go right to the bank since I'm not comfortable with checks that size sitting around. But hey, cool if he's not desperate for it. I just need to keep enough in my checking so if it crosses I don't get any surprise overdraft fees.

I'm guessing he's forgetful or hasn't gotten to it. If he doesn't cash it, how does he know you haven't cancelled the check and/or it's really good? I can write a check for a million dollars, but if my account doesn't have it, the person cashing it won't know until they attempt to deposit it.

That, very weird. I did "misplace" a check one time but months? I cant explain that one. I got bills to pay!

Surprisingly, the only check I've written so far was for the venue deposit, and they deposited it within a week. Everyone else took credit cards (which we were thankful for so we could get credit card points!)

So far, I have only paid with either my debit card, paypal, or bill pay thru my checking account. I hate writing checks because i hate waiting on them to deposit. I want to be certain the debit is taken out of my account right away.

I have the same thing with my florist. But when I checked in she told me that she deposited my check. Still hasn't come out of my bank account though... Everyone that takes cards is getting payment by credit card. (Bonus: cash back!!)

That is a bit odd, especially for a business. I know that when people get checks they tend to sit around for a while, because outside of business things like this, most people don't use checks often anymore and don't frequent a physical bank often. But one would think that a business person would be in the habit of taking care of this more promptly, its how they are getting paid after all! I used my credit card for everything I have paid for (gimme those points!). The only vendor that has been paid by check is my photographer, and my parents paid the down payment on that, though she cashed it promptly.

My DJ took like 2 months to cash theirs. Drove me nuts, since I transferred money from savings (aka our wedding fund) and i had to keep making sure I didn't accidentally spend it.

I think it's up to the vendors really. If I was a vendor I would cash the check right away. I hate when you send a check and then they sit, so for that fact I think vendors should cash them. Maybe they are more concerned about if something goes array and they have to give the money back, but then just deposit the check into an account that they don't touch. As far as my vendors they all cashed the checks or I paid with debit card. Didn't have anyone that just sat on my payments - thankfully!

I had to bug my florist to cash our check! I don't know about you but I don't have 2500+ just hanging out in my account on the regular. My other vendor was our make up artist but that check was not for nearly as much. Drove me nuts!

I wish all of mine took credit cards for the points! This guy is a fairly new wedding photographer so thankfully it's only $300 to worry about keeping in the account. He was at least still quick to answer while overseas so at least he's got good business practices in other senses, but I feel bad that I have to bug him repeatedly.

I think that's too long, and it's very rude to hold a check more than a week!! Contact him again.

Holding on to them for a week or two is one thing but 2 months is ridiculous.
