Has anyone ever been or heard of a wedding where someone objected to the wedding? This was a topic on the radio this morning...

Only in the movies! I’ve been to weddings where I wouldn’t be surprised if someone did, but it never happened.

No, our pastor told us that it's actually quite a serious thing, if someone, evenly jokingly said anything, he would have to stop the entire wedding and look into the matter. If it was a legitimate reason, we couldn't get married and we'd owe whoever spoke up some money, if it wasn't, the person who spoke up would have to pay us a sum of money (I think to cover the costs of the reception).

And now I have a Taylor Swift song in my head!

Well it's a legal matter they're asking about, like if the bride is still legally married, or the groom is the bride's long lost brother or something, so the pastor would have to look into it. That's what he told us, anyway! Could have just said it to scare the GMs from saying anything stupid, but I don't know, haha.

Amy, I have no sweet clue!

One of our GM's was a GM in another wedding where a drunk usher yelled out when the couple was signing the marriage license "Make sure you sign the back of it too, Brad, in case you want to return her!"

I've heard it's based on the concept of pre-contract. In olden times, engagements were considered to be a business contract and held the force of law behind them. If you stood up and said the marriage could not continue, it was because either the bride or groom was not legally free to marry due to pre-contract.

For example, King Henry VIII's fifth wife (one of several Katherines) was in a state of 'pre-contract,' or engagement, with a man named Dereham when she met the king. So she was not actually free to marry, but did so anyway. Because, hello, being a queen is way better than being minor nobility back in the day.

This meant the marriage was not legitimate in the eyes of the church or law, and that plus a few extramarital shenanigans left Katherine a head shorter. *thwack!* goes the axe...

Or, if you want to go all Jane Eyre, there's always a chance there's a mad pyromaniac wife stashed in the attic.

It will not even be asked at our wedding if anyone objects. Then there won't be any issue.

I've never been to one where anyone objected although my friends and I have been to some where we should have. In fact, the girl he married was so damn crazy that she made us leave after the ceremony because one her "girls" told her that my friend tried to stand up and object but that we pulled he back into her seat, which was total BS. That was such a Jerry Springer celebration I cringe to think I was ever even there. :-s

For me the Catholic Church doesn't use that line instead they run the bans of marriage in the bulletin for three weeks before the wedding. I was seriously asking my FH this questions the other day haha.

It wont even be asked at our wedding. I dont think anyone would have the gall to object....but i wont even give them the opportunity to do so.

I know!! It would be insane for people to do this. I have heard of the mothers refusing to go to the wedding because they did not agree but not object there at the ceremony...

The goof-ball brother of a groom stood up at one of my ceremonies and said, "Wait, you didn't ask if anyone objected." Knowing he was the family clown, I replied, "I didn't ask -- sit down and shut up." He promptly put his bottom back in his chair -- instead of creating an uproar and taking the focus off the B&G.

I worried that I was too tough on him, but after the ceremony, he offered me his arm for the recessional. So, I said, "I bet you hear 'sit down and shut up' a lot." He laughed and said, "All the time!"

The B&G recommended me to another couple. When I showed up for that wedding, the first B&G were now the BM & MOH for the second B&G.

The first bride asked if I remembered them. "Of course, I saw your B-in-law (in a kilt) flashing someone on the other side of a window!" First bride replied, "That was me he was flashing!"
