Spanx ... Confused??

Ok, so I have heard a lot of talk about spanx. I personally have never had or worn a pair. I have hips and thighs. I am usually a size 12/14. When I purchase them, do you order the size you are and they are smaller or do you order a size smaller to "hold it all in".

    I got off brand spanx from target. It was important for me to try them on. I got full body open bust spanx for my going away dress. I actually ended up getting a size larger than I usually get (I don't know what that brands measurements are, but I'm usually a large and I got an XL) they are comfortable and were under $30
